I've got a 1st level elven ranger and I'd like to just get a guard dog or riding dog that I can train to attack, heel, etc. It wouldn't have any of the extra benefits of an animal companion, but I'd hope to get it to a police dog level of training. Can I do this in LG? Can I just spend TUs to get some of those package training deals that are detailed in the PH? |

All references to riding dog..guard dog has a problematic issue (lack of stat block). You can purchase a dog with three tricks. You can then spend a TU to make an animal handling check to teach it an additional trick, up to the maximum tricks the dog can have (6). If the dog dies, start again. Remember that you'll need to spend two tricks on attack in order to get it to attack many creatures using just the attack command. You'll need to spend two tricks for it to use the trip ability. The LGCS superceeds the PH regarding training, and does not provide a mechanism for training for a purpose, nor purchasing an animal trained for a purpose. Some judges may interpret animals differently. The information above is conservative, and may be overkill at some tables. David |

You can take 10 on the check but you can't take 20. If you can't make the DC you'll have to reroll for each trick in front of the DM. Mike |
