Suppose 598 really is the last year for LG, as the evidence out of GenCon seems to be implying. I've done some math, and it's making me kind of unhappy about how Greyhawk Ruins is likely to work out.

Assume a PC never crafts and only plays 1 TU mods (by taking Greyhawk residency and sticking to the right Cores and CGRs). Also assume the PC always plays at CL = APL on even levels, and plays up half the time at odd levels.

"Expedition" is supposed to take characters from level 8 to level 13. On the assumptions above, it will take 35 TUs to get from the beginning of 8th level to the beginning of 13th. So I'll assume "Expedition" takes 35 TUs. That leaves 18 TUs for the rest of 598.

On those same assumptions, it takes 22 TUs to get from the beginning of level 5 to the beginning of level 8. So, a Greyhawk Ruins PC needs to be 4 ARs into Level 5 *on January 1, 2008*. Again on these assumptions, that means the PC needs 24 ARs under her belt in 597.

Four of those ARs will be from "Ruins of Discovery." One could be from "Ambition's Folly." I have my doubts that we will see 19 other mods available for play at APL 4 and below between now and the end of December. The only way to do it appears to be by playing a lot of low-APL regionals. (The 2 TU cost will sting less, since 597 TUs are plentiful for characters starting only now.) Trouble is, many people have been intentionally playing low-APL regionals with characters they intend NOT to use in the ruins.

There appear not be enough weeks in the year to actually play through the Greyhawk Ruins arc without cheating and using nonexistent CY 599 TUs. I guess that's no big deal, but it's still irksome to me.

It might help if the Circle allows unused 597 TUs to be carried over into 598, though, but I'm actually not sure and a little doubtful about even that.

I'm simply concerned with the play required to get to 8th level. Those are some strict assumptions.

I hope, perhaps, that advancement will be spend up.

LG was set up for a 5 year planned campaign. If we have to finish up at normal speed, we should get normal speed XP

If LG was set up for a 5 year planned campaign, then somebody goofed, cause we are in year 7 right now if you didn't notice...

I think what he means is that LG was set up for 5-year plot arcs. When LG debuted in 2000, many regions planned out 5-year plot arcs. Those wrapped up in 595 CY (2005), whereupon some regions began another set of 5-year plot arcs (some began 3-year plot arcs). Of course, some regions never had cohesive multi-year plot arcs planned out to begin with, so they've kind of just been continuing along as is....

This all sounds like another supporter of removing the TU strictures for 2008. Or, the rest of THIS year, for that matter.
I'm sure the Circle will have more to say soon.

Anyone have any idea what you need to play with your Ruins PC to get to play the expedition mod before 2008, assuming a reasonable (1-2 sessions/month) level of play?

There wouldn't be much point in doing that. Three quarters of the Greyhawk Ruins adventures won't even be released until 2008, and I'm pretty sure Expedition adaptation won't be out until sometime in 2008 either.

That said, and on the assumptions I made in the original post, you'd need just over 42 ARs to get a new character to 8th level. Count adapteds as half as many ARs as their TU cost if you just want to know how to level a PC up to 8th in as little real time as possible, and you aren't concerned about playing both the CGR arc and "Expedition to the Ruins of Greyhawk."

It was announced that they were removing TUs for '08, but it sounded like it might not be seet in stone yet.
