Two questions: Craft, and Improved Buckler Defense [Archive] - Wizards Community

My local gaming locale is going to start running Living Greyhawk adventures, so I've been putting together a character concept. After reading the LGCS, I've got two questions...

First, am I correct in my understanding of the LGCS description of the Craft skill, that it cannot actually be used to craft items for the player's use in Living Greyhawk, but only to make money? And as such, is it useless to have more than one Craft skill? My character would like to be an armorer, a weaponsmith, and an alchemist; but if he can't actually make his own masterwork equipment and alchemical items, this would seem to be a waste of skill points. Alternately, is the limit of 1 TU applied per individual Craft skill, so having all three skills would allow spending 3 TUs and 3 checks?

Second, regarding the feat Improved Buckler Defense from Complete Warrior: it reads, "When you attack with a weapon in your off hand, you may still apply your buckler's shield bonus to your Armor Class." Does a two-handed weapon allow use of this feat, as it is wielded in both hands (including the off-hand)? Asking on the general D&D forums, I was told that this was heavily debated, so I'm hoping for an official LG ruling.

I didn't even notice that the text on that was like that...It's like the horrible language on Prismatic Ray...

I continue to be unimpressed with the WotC editors...

Seriously, though, I want an answer to these questions as well. The buckler thing is a curiosity issue, and I'm honestly not that worried about it, but the craft question is one I'm not clear on and would like a straight answer about.

Can you craft your own mundane items in Living Greyhawk?

No, you must purchase them. You can role-play having made them during TU spent crafting for GP, but they must be purchased.

There is no point in having more than 1 craft skill, because you can only use one option to gain money after a module.

It can be worth throwing a few points into some craft skills. I have seen adventures where having the skill meant more treasure or being able to take an alternate path or finding more information than you would normally get.

If you're a live off of the land type of guy, then Craft (bowmaking) is useful, but that is the only one I can think of.

As to the Improved Buckler Defense question, there is no official ruling in LG (either by the Circle, in the LGCS or in one of the FAQs) that I'm aware of.

That means that it will be up to the discretion of the judge whether such a thing is useable with a 2-h weapon at their table. While many judges -- such as myself -- would allow it, many others will not, so be forewarned, and don't build an entire character concept around the feat...

Gotcha... safest just to avoid the issue, then. Thanks!

Like I said, like the bad language in the Prismatic Ray description...The intent of the rule seems clear, but the actually technical meaning doesn't say it works with two handed weapons...

Well, technically when you attack with a two-handed weapon you ARE attacking with a weapon in your offhand...it's just also in your main hand at the same time.

Aye, I was going to say the same thing as Dracspero... the weapon is in your off-hand.
Since you lose Buckler AC if you attack with a weapon in that hand, the real question would be: Can you use a weapon 2-Handed while wearing a Buckler? And the answer to that, I believe, is yes.

ok here is an answer to your question about the two handed thign.

now the one thing is if you meant it as double bladed or not this is from R&D.

there is not a problem using the Improved Buckler Defense feat with a double weapon (like a two-bladed sword), but not a two-handed weapon (like a greatsword).

so you can't use it with a greatsword but yes to a 2 bladed sword.

so you can't use it with a greatsword but yes to a 2 bladed sword.

This seems rather arbitrary. What is your reasoning for this?

Edit: In fact, I'd argue the PHB supports my position. Page 124, under buckler, it says "You can also use your shield arm to wield a weapon (whather you are using an off-hand weapon or using your off hand to help wield a two-handed weapon)...". That indicates to me that wielding a two handed weapon is considered as wielding a weapon in your off-hand, and so would count for Improved Buckler Defense, which says "When you attack with a weapon in your off hand...".
