Would it be possible for a character to use the take 20 to use a wand, such as CLW, after the battle is over? |
| Oogar08-10-06, 04:36 PM | Nope, any skill that has a possible negative consequence to a poor roll is a skill that you cannot take 20 on. With a 1 on UMD and a wand, the wand 'locks up' for that character for 24 hours. So... negative consequence = no taking 20. |

You can't use UMD untrained (so you have to have at least 1 rank) and you can't roll a zero. I suppose you could have negative attribute modifiers that could bring the result down to a 1, but if that's the case, then what are you trying to UMD a wand for? |
| Oogar08-10-06, 05:37 PM | The 1 is a 'natural 1' and is specific to UMD for skill checks. Normally there is no 'critical failure' for skills other then UMD. |

Because your Occult Slayer doesn't always trust the cleric to cast the spell the cleric says he's going to cast? |

Read the entry again...It says, "If you roll a 1 AND you fail..." You have to do both. It is possible to roll a one and still succeed, which would not trigger a mishap. I would allow someone to take 20, simply so I can roll 19 mishaps. XD |
| RLWilde08-11-06, 12:40 AM | It is possible to roll a one and still succeed, which would not trigger a mishap. But if you have enough of a bonus in UMD to succeed on a 1, why are you taking 20? :) |
| Gumbymoto08-11-06, 08:53 PM | With a 8 CHR and one skill level it would give me a zero on the skill roll, if I had been able to take 20 on this one it would have allowed me to use a CLW wand at the end of a battle to heal myself in case the party did not have a devine caster saving a ton of gold vs potions. (CLW wand 750gp 50 charges vs 50gp for a potion) Thanks for the info!!!! |
