What if someone joined LG but didn't want to play . . . [Archive] - Wizards Community

I've been getting conflicting messages on this issue, so I thought I'd come here in the hopes of getting a more authoritative answer.

People keep talking about the volumes and volumes of scenarios produced for LG, and about how all that a person needs to do to gain access to them is to join RPGA (which is free). Now, it's been my impression that when you order LG scenarios, you need to report back on what happened when you ran them (and you need to run them as written - no alterations or additions). So, hypothetically, if a person were to join RPGA and order LG scenarios, then use them like any home DM would (i.e., use what you like, skip what you don't, freely make additions or alterations as desired), what would happen? Would you eventually be unable to order scenarios? Or is it not really a problem?

The RPGA modules are provided for the use of and benefit to members using them in the appropriate RPGA context. It is not an open and free 'module library.' (If you are looking for that, just subscribe to Dungeon magazine, which provides very nice modules each month).

Can you 'skim' the modules off the RPGA without reporting them? Yes, you can, but at some point, all the ordering and consequential cancelling of those gamedays will send up a red flag to HQ. I'd say it's not worth it.

Thanks, Steve. That was my impression, but as I said, I had been getting conflicting reports.

Of course, if you order the scenarios from the RPGA you need to run them for an LG event and report it to HQ afterwards.

If you then use that scenario for your home game afterwards or as the basis for a homebrew scenario I doubt anyone is going to complain.

Right. RPGA wouldn't know or care whether I modified its scenarios for a home game after properly running them in an LG event. My question may not have been very clear, but I was asking about ordering scenarios and then either not reporting back at all or reporting the events as canceled (or unattended or something like that).

Thanks again for the responses.

Well, I do know that you can only have four outstanding events. Beyond that, who knows.

I might be wrong but it was my understanding that all you have to do is report who played in the scenario that is an RPGA member...if less than four people showed up for your event they can't really rake you over the coals. ;)

But why not just get your players to join the RPGA? Its not like they have to go to any events except your home games, right?

Technically, you have to have a minimum of 4 RPGA members playing for it to be a reportable table. And, all players need to be RPGA members.

So this applies even if the event is a home game huh? Well that answers a question I sent to the RPGA a couple of days ago. Here's hoping all my group members make it to the sessions I've ordered scenarios for and that the RPGA gets me membership sign-up kits for them on time or else I'll have a few "Hmmm? Oh yeah nothing happened" reports to send back.

Yep, home games too. HQ usually send some membership sign up cards to you though so you should be fine.

You might be able to get some sign up cards from your triad or local games store if they run LG regularly if needed. :)

The only problem that I may encounter with this is that one of the four people in my group has attendance that is "spotty" at best, We (the group as a whole) have made up for this by running short adventures which is what led me to joining the RPGA via the GM test on-line. We've actually been playing LG scenarios for a while now and found them to be of excellent quality. But that's neither here nor there. Often we go with the 3 folks who make it regularly and I (the DM) run an NPC. I guess that'll have to change now if that game-night is an official event. This bodes poorly for me given that the flakey one is a friend of my fiancee so giving her the boot will be dicey.
