I'm a relatively new player and am going to a few cons this year. There is to be an "interactive" at at least one of them, and the way people talk about them you'd think it was an Amway convention. I've looked here and on the web, and although there are plenty of references to them I can find nothing defining the term or explaining why it's so fabulous. Anyone want to fill me in? Thanks! :)

Interactives are Living Greyhawk adventures that commonly combine elements of live action role playing and meta game activities with the table top game. They can only be hosted and played at convention sized shows.

Most of the time, an Interactive features a battle, a big festival or some kind of competition. For example, we had an Interactive in Nyrond when King Lynwerd got married in 594 CY at CONduit. The following year at Weekend in Nyrond, we had an Interactive where tables coordinated their efforts to conduct a naval battle.

I hope that helps.

That does sound like fun, thanks for explaining.

Do they cost any more in TUs? I'll be visiting from outside of both Regions hosting the con. I expect to pay 2 TUs per game, but I know sometimes they cost more.

TU cost is the same as normal. However, you only gain half the normal gold or experience. Also, it's based on the character's level and not the APL of the table. Access tends to be better than normal.

Nuts and bolts:

TU cost is the same (normal cost per round, double for out of region, and I suppose it could cost more for special circumstances, but I've never seen it).
Max gold and XP are half of normal, and you can only get the rewards for your level, rounded down (so if you are level 5, playing at APL 6, you get APL 4 rewards)
Melee in interactives is generally more difficult
Item access is usually good, however the number of interactives in a region that can give item access on ARs is limited (that is, the interactive you attend might not grant any access at all)

The gist:

Interactives are generally more "fun" than "roll-playing". There is usually a LARP portion (marriage, election (and the alleged rigging of said election, not that that has *ever* happened and there's probably no evidence to support such a claim), grand ball, etc.) that involves you interacting with NPCs that are literally standing right there in person. How much you get out of it is usually dependant on how much you want to put in (so, if you want to bring a costume for yourself, it's probably not discouraged). Where the interactive goes after the LARP is up to the particular writers, but it's not too hard to guess, most of the time :)

I've also seen interactives where the TU cost is doubled (2 or 4), but you receive normal gold and experience.

...Which would be half of what you'd normally get for double TU cost.

XP/BP by character level vs. APL is not consistant...it varies based upon the nature of the interactive. I've written two...one was by character level and the other was by APL.

Access can vary widely. In Nyrond, interactives generally only play at one con. We might have 10-14 interactives per year, but only four of them provide any access at all; the others are for the joy of playing.

While there are expection and loop holes each region is supposed to have 4 "access interactives" and unlimited "non access interactives." Note non-access interactive can give favors, gold, xp, and roleplaying beanies
