According to the LGCS you have to roll a survival check against 20 to see if you can still heal your wounds and restore damaged ability scores. You can also fill up your spell comp.-pouch and even make arrows if you have fletching. What it doesn`t tell are the disadvantages you suffer from if you FAIL this roll. Other then not getting the benefits mentioned above I don`t see why itīs a bad thing staying in the wilderness. Especially low level players would spend their time between the adventures in the wood all the time to save money for their first good items. It`s also a roleplaying thing ... I know... anyway... Do I miss something here? |

Flipping the lifestyle advantages on thier head, and reversing them: The biggest disadvantage is injuries and ability damage do not heal between adventures. A smaller disadvantage failing you have to pay for arrow, spell comp pouch and healing kit resupplies, so you'll be out some gold anyway, unless you don't use any of those items. There is also an unspecified social penalty that can be inflicted by the GM for you being smelly, for not having cash to pay for drinks, a room at the inn, etc. Quite often the "live off the wild" folks are forced to sleep in a tree outside the inn, or are otherwise separated from the rest of the party as a result of their decision, when the adventure is in an urban setting. If you think about it, "living off the wild" in a city adventure means dumpster-diving and eating rats, probably. |

| TimRat11-09-05, 11:22 PM | do you mean if you 'live off the wild' that your bar tab is covered? i would say no b/c all your doing by living off the wild is finding shelter and finding a means to heal yourself and find food not buy ale with it. |

Living off the wild means during adventures you bring down the odd bird and gather berries or whatever to stay fed during the adventure, or perhaps are living off smoked/preserved food from a prior kill. I've always assumed the higher DC than Survival requires for just feeding yourself is because you can't devote much time to hunting during an adventure. Should you choose to order a beer, unless you can convince the barkeep to trade your fresh game for alchohol, you probably have to pay a little copper. Normally folks who live off the wild sleep in the wild too (or on the roof, or in a tree, or whatever, someplace in shouting distance of the inn). It can be annoying at times. The mod itself can mitigate this - caravan guards, for example, generally get fed and provide a place by the campfire to sleep, and if you are invited to stay in somebody's castle, you can be pretty sure to be fed and lodged regardless of lifestyle. The guys who paid luxury might get treated better though than the beggars who didn't pay anything, or the wild guys who are told to sleep with the animals in the stables (or perhaps share a hovel with the animal keeper of the castle). |

During adventures, it's the money that you spend on inns, food, etc. It doesn't seem like it would always apply. Ie, you and your companions head across country on foot. Are you all living off the land, iron rations or some high quality victuals that you purchased before leaving? Maybe you're getting by with the cleric casting create food and water or heroes' feast. Between adventures, you have to travel to/from your home. This is pretty stupid at times. I can think of some regional mods that pick up exactly where the last mod in the series left off. Yet, you are still paying for inns and food to get to and from your home. Still, there's no way know that a character will play one mod directly after the other, unless they're made into a 2 round mod. |
| gninja12-05-05, 05:08 PM | My main character lives off the wild all the time. I just assume that if there's a lot of inn interaction, some other character pays for my drinks out of their standard upkeep, and I feed them while travelling with my excessively large take 10 on survival. Most characters would be glad to buy a drink for the guy who can provide them with fresh meat while in the wild. If the module is entirely city-based, it's almost certainly a core module, and then there's still travel time to and from the module. |
