Seriously, what do you say your 16th level character is doing when it retires?

My 15th-level cleric will be the NPC leader of the church of Joramy in Perrenland, when she hits 16 :) I'll save the high-level campaign for my sorcerer (who is much more fun to play). Not sure what my lower-level PCs will be doing, I'll see what regions and causes they get involved in as they advance in level.

My Swashbuckler will likely retire after his wedding to a NPC noble girl sometime next year. He won her hand after a particularly dashing deed at a charity dinner to open an orphanage.

So...I guess you can take your pick which of the nine levels of hell he'll retire to.

P.S. Ah, marriage jokes, will they ever get old?

My rogue will retire into Dread Pirate and start making a fortune escorting merchant ships around, preying on merchant ships if no one will hire her (ie hire me or I take all your stuff!). Fear the +1 flaming ballista of DOOM!

how long does it take to get a character to lvl 16? If you play once a week every week.

My cleric will probably be in the neighbourhood of 95-100 ARs when she retires. That's with no deaths, a focus on regional and metaregional mods over Cores, and no item creation feats (at least up to L15 ;) ) Up until this year, she spent all her TUs each year; if she expended all her remaining TUs this year on adventuring (rather than item creation or joining meta-orgs), that would probably get her to retirement.

So about 100 ARs, or in real time, three years of solid play. I'm sure you can do it faster than that, but I don't think you can manage it *much* faster.

Dammit, I wish I was retired so I could play LG more. :tantrum:

I tell you what. Everyone here send me 5 dollars. If all of you send me 5 bucks then I may be able to not work for a while and play more Dnd. :lightbulb:

somehow around 100 ARs. but some manage to delay it untill way more, intense crafting, xp penalty and a handy death here and there might prolong it up to 200

my mid level 13 has died once, crafts some thingies and is at AR 81 right now.

he will most likely retire end of 597 or start of 598.

considering the death and the crafting and the meta-org TUs it seems around some 200 TUs in total maybe 250 or even 300with crafting.

I have sat down and worked the math on the crafting thing. If you craft every single GP you earn over all 15 levels you will only put your retirement off by a handful of adventures. Unless you spend all your gold crafting wands and scrolls of spells with XP requirements to cast.

I don't think there are ANY 200 AR characters in living greyhawk. The TU math along with number of regional/metaregionals per year doesn't allow for one to exist yet. I did a quick run on the math, and if I started in year one (I chose dyvers region, although the numbers are pretty much identical or lower for any other region), and played every regional adventure, every metaregional adventure, then filled out the rest of your time units playing core or out of region modules then you STILL wouldn't have 200 ARs yet.

Also, said 200 AR character would HAVE to be a 100 percent XP penalty character or otherwise be frozen in time at level 8 or 10, and he needs to have achieved that state during year 3. Anything else and the character is out of the level range of two many of the 1 TU modules.

A reminder, purposely avoiding retirement by costing yourself XP or other means is against the rules. If you do so and are caught, you will be forcibly retired. I've told people in the past that if I see someone with an 80% or 100% xp penalty, maybe even a 60% penalty, they're gone. You have to work to get to something like that. I'll of course ask questions first and make sure you didn't just mess up and were going to be like that for only one level, but 80% or 100% is pretty hard to talk your way out of. Manipulating your xp gains like that drastically alters the gp/level ratio, which in turn impacts the play balance of adventures.

Why don't you just eliminate multiclass penalties altogether in Living Greyhawk? As it is, the "penalty" is really more of a benefit.

ok, i admit 200 ARs might have been to high. it would also need to include a lot of adventures at half xp from playing down.

so reasonable it seems that the max number of ARs is around 120 to 130 and only the most cunning cheese weasels can make it beyond AR 150 :D

Because to some, the xp penalty is a penalty. Some people want to advance at the same rate as their friends and thus try to avoid the penalty and build their characters to fit those rules...as the system was intended.

I retired at 18th with 126 (I think) adventures, and many of those were year one with very little xp. It would definitely take a good deal to make it beyond 150 before 16th. I guess with a couple of deaths and maybe a 20% xp hit for multiclassing, you might take that many to get there.

At least when you're starting out, taking an XP penalty also means depriving yourself of the chance to play the adventures that are only available at higher APLs. I also enjoy playing my PCs as they advance through the levels and gain new abilities: I think I'd find it a little boring to play with exactly the same set of abilities for months or years on end. To each their own, though.

Gads, I can't picture my paladin living long enough to get to retirement level (he's only 6th now). As they say, it ain't the years, it's the mileage, and he's already driving a high-mileage machine. :)

But, if he somehow got to that point, he'd probably go to the temple of Heironeous and start training little baby paladins.

Yay for baby paladins of the Archpaladin! My cleric would love to accompany you...if he wasn't on a holy crusade against Iuz right now. (stupid Shieldlands...)

My cleric will probobly be giving his life and honor in the pursuit of a peaceful Shieldlands. He'll be fighting long after retirement.

My folcuen lyrist is gonna retire and try to buy the shop below her new Love Nest in Qualsteen. Hehe. Then I'm gonna have her make an escourt service. And by escourt service, I mean escourting people through the Vesve. What did you think I ment? Perv...

The rest of them...I don't know. But my Shadow templated shadow-caster/wizard sure has one goal in mind. And it has to do with big shadow-rifts in the space/time continuem, halflings and a ballista, a jar of maple syrup, and The Coming Darkness. ^.^

If Nesalia ever makes it to 16th level, she likely becomes a NPC for the Verbobonc triad to use.

With my characters, it heavily depends on whether or not I'm still Triad when they retire.

My Warchanter would LOVE to take an administrative role at the Furyondy War College, but he has to return to the region for that to happen.

My next highest level character is 5th, so I haven't thought about them yet (although my Favored Soul is likely to take an extended vacation to the Far Realms).

My cleric (currently 13th level) wants to go down taking a pot shot at Iuz. If he can die looking into the livid face of a seriously ****** of demi-god then he will die happy. I doubt he'll get more than one chance at that...

I had a pact with another player (who had a high level monk) to do that together but the monk was permanently killed. So, does anyone else want in on the suicide pact?

Seriously, what do you say your 16th level character is doing when it retires?

Many in our region have spoken to the local Triad and gotten themselves installed as leaders/higher-ups of the local meta-organizations.

This isn't even necessarily the 16th levels either; some characters have died and come back as NPC's just because the player figured they'd had a good run and it was time to retire them.

We have a player in the region who is considering on establishing a temple and becoming the high priest of this new religion. He surely does not need to be level 16th to be so.

And of course, any PC who wants to become a regional NPC for us should have a good sounding fantasy name. If someone wants his half-orc barbarian "Cuthroat hack-kill-slaughta" to become an NPC, you can probably quess what Triads answer will be :D

A reminder, purposely avoiding retirement by costing yourself XP or other means is against the rules.

If a character picks up a 40 or even 20% multiclass penalty for other reasons (say I want Marshal 3 because Motivate Dex is so good, but I already have Pal 4 and Ftr 1) will that raise heads? Because I am seriously considering picking up that marshal level, don't want to delay my prestige class progression by evening out with another level of Fighter, and don't want to get in trouble.

The Keoland Court as an Ambassador from the Duchy of Geoff.

No...seriously. At the end of year 5, a great number of Geoffites had the opportunity to have their characters retire and become a PART of the story. Effectively becoming NPC's. Some became high-ranking officials, others became shop owners. Even others became behind the scenes people (those shady types). We (Geoffites) have run into a number of the PC's turned NPC's in mods so far (and ones not even authored by the original owner).

All I know is my Diplomat (who retired at 10th) became a member of the Keoish Court as an Ambassador.

After having played in several of the Year 6 Highfolk mods, I know that some of the characters that retired into that region have been incorporated into the story arc, on varying sides of the political and alignment spectrums. In fact, if I recall correctly, the last of the Year 5 interactives was designed to let the crowd of soon-to-retire PCs turn on each other in PC vs. PC combat. Though the rumor had it that the combat was brought to a screeching halt by some PCs, one of whom has appeared in the Highfolk story arc...

My high-level PCs are still, at 11th level, quite a long way from retirement, but if the high-level campaign doesn't appear to be a viable option for my fighter, he might end up buying that 10,000 gp boat after all...

"Renton Swan Begby, negotiator and bodyguard, barrister and scourge of the Nyr Dyv!"

...It may work...

I hope, someday, to play my wizard in the high-level campaign, but if I end up retiring him, I could imagine the following options:

1) Set up and maintain a tower and/or magical defense for the Sidhee forest (after restoring its connection to the Oerth, of course).
2) Construct a highly-trapped tower from which to maintain behind the scenes political machinations (unbeknownst to the political players).
3) Plot the downfall of Iuz as a high-ranking member of the Drinkers.
4) Or offer services to Iuz as a Boneshadw in return for access to... everything. (Assuming, of course, that Iuz is kosher with preserving, not destroying, magical items; that would go against Boccob's will. I'm pretty sure. But, then again, he didn't seem to get all worked up when we sacrificed a few artifacts to cure a horrible disease.)

Well, sonny. All boys and girls go to a lovely place when they die.

The Nine Layers of Hell! Yayyy!

All jokes aside, I'd like my Monk to become a travelling milk vendor in the Iuz Metaregion. He just loves that milk. I'd like my Fighter to become some powerful Knight. Alas, he is only a Squire- but a few character deaths...I'M THERE!

Well, it's entirely possible that my high level character (level 15) could end up retiring to Deeprock (that'd be the prison in the Shield Lands for those not in the know). If I somehow manage to avoid that fate then I'm not sure. Assuming that he can regain access to his forest then he may just end up there as one of the guardians.

P.S. I'm right around 100 AR's and I'll be retiring sometime in year 7 barring deaths and the like.

This is kind of tricky, and you have to be careful not to play any 2-rounders,
as this will cause you to run out of TU's near the end of the year.

Someone might want to do the math on this, and I presume you do not want
to take half on any mod.

how long does it take to get a character to lvl 16? If you play once a week every week.

I did the math. Why I do not know. Maybe I am bored.
If you get the standard XP for each adventrue, and always play the highest
APL you can to get full XP, I get 87 adventures to hit 16th lev.

Hope I do not suck up your bandwidth with this, below...
