Where is your stuff on your character? [Archive] - Wizards Community

I'm sure everybody knows that guy thats got 18 str and is carrying the equipment list from the phb. Where is the stuff on your characters body? The PHB lists a beltpouch as 1gp. What is the point of buying a beltpouch? The PHB doesn't list wat fits in: a beltpouch, backpack, or a sack? So I'm asking how do you determine where people are keeping their stuff and how much more stuff they can fit into their backpack/sack/beltpouch.

Ex. party raids a .... cave or tomb or watever, they find 520,000 copper coins in a heap in the center of the room. How much can they carry out?

All of it, in bags of holding, multiple trips, and the handy dandy Tenser's Floating Disc that any good wizard has prepped after about level 5.

Well since my ranger carries 200 arrows about him without the aid of one of Japangirls' handy extradementional spaces let me say a few words.

The glave and longbow are carried crosswise on my characters back. One quiver is attached to the bow's sheathe/harness (20 arrows) another is alongside the glave (20 arrows). On each shin he carries another quiver (20 arrows each) at the hip he wears a quiver on each side (20 arrows each) the other 80 arrows are at the bottom of his backpack (since with only 3 attacks per round 120 arrows in normally sufficient for any given encounter.)

Buying a Quiver of Ehlonna is on my to do list, but thats due more to antics with law in the Free City than any concerns about carrying stuff.

If it's not a slotted item, then I generally keep it in one of three places:
Small items of little or no weight (flash pellets, signal whistle, chalk, tindertwigs, etc.) go in my belt pouch
Most weapons and ammo go in my quiver of Ehlonna
Everything else stays in a Heward's handy haversack

Hi

Or the Warmage took for his "Advanced Learning" at 3rd Level.
(Mine did). :D

Cheers

Edit:
Basic kit in backpack. Wands etc on belt. Light Crossbow on back. Club etc on my belt.

I do in fact try to work out where everything is, which sometimes leads to funny character descriptions.

My archer at lower levels was just festooned with weaopns, before exotic ammunition types end extradimensional storage cleaned up his act.

He was the kind of guy you see in comedy sketches who when asked to check his weapons causes a time-cut-scene to 15 minutes later when he is STILL pulling out weapons and the pile is threatening to teeter off the table...

like in Sahara?

My fighter has a really large back pack for his stuff. some of it like the rope is lashed to the out side. He has a 'golf bag' for his javelins. (To make things easier I just may buy 2 quivers of ehlonna for him.

My wizard has a wagon he keep everything in. Though he shoves most of the stuff in a Heward's when the wagon is inappropriate.

My other 2 characters don't really carry that much...

Um, you do realize that HHH has a pretty limited weight capacity compared to a "real" bag of holding. If you need a wagon to carry your stuff then I'm not sure that "most" of it or even "some" of it would fit into the HHH.

BUT, a haversack tops out around 80 pounds. A wagon can hold several thousand pounds.

So, the wagon won't fit into the haversack....

So, the wagon won't fit into the haversack....Neither will it fit into a bag of holding (it's too big in terms of physical dimensions -- i.e., it won't fit in the opening of the bag). But I wasn't addressing whether then entire contents of a wagon, and or the wagon itself, would fit into an HHH just disputing the usefulness of said HHH.

Anyone who needs more than one of any type of extradimensional space probably needs to reevaluate whether they really need everything they're carrying...

Yeah, how much xtradimensional space do you need really? How much stuff does it take you to survive? Leave the waterclock at home.....

But is there nething official that details how much u CAN fit into a backpack/beltpouch/sack cuz I've got some pack mule PC's in my group and I'm wondering where they're keeping it all.

I never said the HHH wasn't a useful item (all my characters have one) I was merely pointing out that the "most" of the contents of a wagon would not fit into the rather small (compared to a wagon) space that the HHH offers as opposed by a "bag of holding" that can hold several hundred pounds of stuff.

of course a HHH does let wizzies legitmately access the right scroll out of the 300 they own round after round .. something that can be a real downer if your GM is strict about such things

Yep... That's what I see as the HHH's biggest advantage over the various size bags, namely the "what I want is always on top" feature -- sure, getting something out of a bag of holding doesn't take any longer than from a HHH*, but retrieving from the HHH doesn't provoke AoOs; retrieving from the bag does.

I don't play any spellcasters (none that make extensive use of scrolls), but since LG doesn't have anything like the infinite scrollcase (from Magic of Eberron), a HHH is going to have to suffice. They're also perfect for support characters. My rogue, for example, is mainly a combat-rogue, but he knows when he is outclassed and when to fall back and simply help the rest of the team. To that end, he carries a large supply of tanglefoot bags, alchemist's fire, holy water, acid flasks, flash pellets, etc. -- being able to pull an item and throw, pull an item and throw, can be quite assistive (?), especially for those tanglefoots. Many DMs, in my experience, will also let you retrieve such items from the HHH while moving -- just like combining drawing a weapon with a regular move -- thereby allowing you throw and move, if necessary (YMMV).

* A move action -- unless the bag contains more than an ordinary backpack would hold, in which case retrieving a specific item is a full-round action. And honestly -- when does anyone with a bag of holding ever have less then what an ordinary backback would hold?

retrieving a stored item is a move action. It is always a move action. There is basically no point to a belt pouch is there?

Belt pouch sounds more like a flavor item, really.
My main char, who is the Str 18 type that carries everything mentioned above, only has a backpack, which contains everything that isn't a weapon or a disposable (still quite a lot). In combat she drops the backpack so she can move quicker.
Her weapons (quite a number) are strapped all over her body. DIsposables are on her belt. She might take a HHH once she gets access though (not sure yet), just so she will always be 'light'.
The only other PC that is going for extra-dimensional space is Greaser, my rogue. he fiollows the Haley principle: You can never have enough extradimensional storage.
All my other PCs carry way too little to worry about storage.
My bard is going for a wardrobe of dresses, though, so perhaps a HHH might also be a good idea for her.

I know, 80lbs, 20lbs and 20lbs.

which means his barrel of ale, barrel of water, his chest, his firewood, his ladder, and wagon (of course) get left behind, but his 'adventuring tools' all fit.

By most I mean, by line item, not by weight.

That's easy. It all gets Greyhawked and turns in to "GP Gained" on the AR. Assuming no overcap, of course.

There's something to be said about people who try to justify where everything is on their character: not enough suspension of disbelief. :) As far as I know (and I'd like to think I know the rules pretty well) there is nothing which details carrying capacity beyond carry weight. Bags of holding are used for people with less Strength to carry more stuff. People with high Strength just carry stuff.

My barbarian carries 5 weapons: a greataxe, greatclub, glaive, heavy mace, and composite longbow. The only rule I'm aware of is that he can only wield one of them at any given time (given that most of them are two-handed weapons and thus not subject to two-weapon fighting in the traditional sense).

I do know that I can only carry (or, at least, *use*) one neck slot item, one hat item, one glove item, one boot item, etc. There are limited amounts of space for magic item, though it is possible to wear two magic necklaces (and, heck, even two pairs of boots!) but only one of the items may have its magic being used at any given time. This reminds me of an Adventurers! (comic) cartoon where the fighter is wearing a pair of boots on his feet and another on his hands.

It actually really bugs me when GMs demand to know how I'm carrying everything. Adventurers have enough to worry about with carry weight ("Can I carry these extra javalins without being encumbered?") to also bother with capacity ("I could have sworn that portable ram was around here *somewhere*!").

This does sometimes matter though. Think of the spells Dim. Door, Teleport, Teleportation Circle, etc... These all have weight limits. You can't just say "Oh, I teleport all 7 people the wagon full of plundered treasure the horses, the special mounts and that goblin for good measure." Also there are certain traps out there that are set off by weight, so again it's VERY important to know how much you weigh and where your gear is.

As a DM it sometimes bug me when players don't know this stuff and make it harder for me to run the adventure because the player needs to take 15 minutes to figure this stuff out that should have been figure out before hand.

Remember there are always two sides to the coin.
Munkwunk

No argument there. Like I said, players already need to know how much their gear weighs, that's for certain. It's something I do keep track of because there are encumbrance rules for a reason.

It's the way you carry your gear that is sort of superfluous. DimDoor may need to know that my greatclub weighs 8 pounds, but it doesn't care that I have the greatclub strapped to my back next to my glaive. There's a reason we have weight limits in D&D but not volume limits (generally); it's too much hassle to get that nitty-gritty about the way you carry stuff.

I usually don't worry about it too much. I know I have a backpack, satchel, a few pouches, a belt or two, and half a dozen sacks that live in the backpack in case a need ever arises. I can usually figure out where I would keep something if I ever needed to know, but most times I don't. Most items it doesn't matter.

Large items on the other hand, I think players should mark it out. If you have a polearm on your back, you're going to have a difficult time going through doors. By the rules, I could walk around with a pair of rowboats, but I think any decent DM would impose restrictions indoors. If I wasn't worried about carrying logistics, I'd carry around a ladder, or better yet, build a 30 foot version. Maybe once I get a bag of holding...

For the most part, all my rogue's gear is in either a HHH or a quiver of Ehlonna, and he weighs in at under 150 lbs., yet once he draws a weapon, he goes over that. I have seen traps where 150 or 200 is the trigger, or what forces an aerial mount from non-encumbered to encumbered. So if you have extra-dimensional storage esp., you have to know whether a particular piece of gear is stored in there or "externally"

Again, that's a weight issue. If you're at the point where you become encumbered by drawing a weapon from your haversack, then it is important to at least know what's in the bag and what's on your person, sure.

If you need extradimensional storage to carry things, it is important to know what's in the bag. It's also relevant when you enter a Forbiddance, since your extradimensional storage won't work inside one of those.

That still doesn't give you reason to know exactly how each item on your person is fashioned, and that's the only argument I'm trying to make. We've probably all heard about someone who carries around a dozen flasks of alchamists fire and people joke about him having them on a bandolier, but the truth is he could just as easily have them all strapped to his belt or even his boots.

There's no game mechanic for accidentally smashing open your flasks of alchemist fire when someone smacks you across the chest with a greatclub because it's not any fun to worry about that sort of thing. So even if you have a half-dozen vials of alchemist fire strapped to your chest and a knife between your teeth, you ignore all of that flavor when the giant clobbers you across the front. He'd have to make a sunder attempt against a single vial (even though realistically his greatclub could easily cover enough area to smash several) because that's how the game works. So the only thing that matters is whether the fire is in a haversack or whether it's on you person *somewhere*, because the giant has an equal chance to sunder the item if it's strapped to your chest as he does if it's tucked in your back pocket.

Well I use belt puches for easy potion access and other important stuff I want the PARTY to know where I keep it.

ALso some nice DMs allow me to quick draw potions and wands from my pouches assuming they are the only type of thing in that pouch...

Speaking of carrying items, finally got someone to roll a one on a fireball trap in a game I was DMing yesterday, hasn't happened before, destroyed some minor magical trinket :)

question... if the ONLY item you have on you, other than clothes, is a HHH full of cool stuff... does it get roasted by a nat 1 ref save?
