I gotta ask. Why is Zagyg not listed as one of the "Religions" of Greyhawk in the Ruins of Greyhawk Sourcebook? This just seems illogical.

I would guess...

1) He's relatively underpowered as far as deities go

2) His apotheosis was recent enough that what followers he has haven't had time to build up a large organized base (and let's face it -- Zagyg's as CN as they come, IMHO)

3) Seems a little weird for a chunk of the population to be worshiping their 'mad as a hatter' ex-mayor... ;)

It's a fairly open secret that Zagyg the demigod of occult knowledge and eccentric humor is the same as Zagig the mad archmage, the most infamous ruler of Greyhawk.

Although the city grew tremendously under the rule of the mad archmage, most inhabitants of the city remember him more for his bizarre rules and behavior. It's actually a minor miracle that the whole city didn't implode while under his rule just based on some of his schemes and habits (planned on having walls of elemental energy instead of regular stone walls surrounding the city, had a personal flesh golem attendant dressed like the overking of aerdy, a pet black dragon that attended oligarchy meetings with him, and toyed with an artifact that randomly burned nearby people's body parts, etc.)

Zagyg does have a shrine somewhere in the old part of the city, but IIRC it is mostly tended by wandering members of his faith than locals who actually revere him.

But for the most part, Zagyg is a part of greyhawk history that most greyhawkers would rather forget, though his influence is still felt throughout the city. There are still odd laws in the books that can trip up some people (can't escort a halfling across the processional, can't carry waterfowl on a certain day, etc). The annual Feast of Fools celebration is actually one of the ways Greyhawkers remember Zagig's rule.

From a certain point of view, one might even say that the entire city of Greyhawk might be considered his temple and all its inhabitants his unwitting followers...

Actually, he has more domains than is normal for a demigod.

Demigods normally get 3 domains plus extra domains according to their alignment.

Zagyg gets 4 in addition to chaos.

I have heard, but not looked it up myself, that there is no temple to Zagyg in the Flanaess.

I have heard, but not looked it up myself, that there is no temple to Zagyg in the Flanaess.

Some PCs set one up in Verbobonc I think, when they had their town charters or whatever.

Only one I know of in LG or old canon.

PS unless you count the ship of fools as a mobile church?

I've looked it up.
No temple in the City of Greyhawk Boxed Set, From the Ashes, or The Adventure Begins.

There is a temple to Zagyg in Twilight Falls, Verbobonc, called the Cathedral of Blessed Confusion.
It was founded by Sojan Nanziz (the mayor), with his cohort Samaris and Nesalia R'tannouien. It is run by Samaris, though for more than one year, when she was absent, it was taken over by Nesalia (then minister of religion), even though by then she had become a cleric of Aasterinian (it is quite unlikely anyone ever noticed, as the touch of Zagyg never leaves you).
It is, afaik, the only temple in the Flanaess, and in fact the only place with any measure of an organized (if that can be applied) congregation.

Realize that Zagyg simply doesn't have an organized faith (much like Aasterinian, btw), so his lack of a temple is not due to lack of worship, but due to the nature of his priesthood, who don't do that kind of stuff normally. Twilight Falls is an exception - if only because it would be near unnatural if there wasn't an exception...

Well what about Beory? She has a shrine attended by lay worshippers and she is allowed to have a religious organization. It seems odd to me. I expect that it would be similar. Plus didnt zagyg rule like 4 hundred or so years ago? I think most people dont remember him unless they actually study history.

Zagyg's too good for churches anyways. And like someone had said, he's about as chaotic as they come- and the closest thing resembling an actual church would be the Ship of Fools, as another person stated.

Also, Zagig was a devote worshipper of Boccob. I think. I don't remember 100%, because it's not often that I glance at Greyhawk canon.

Actually, Zagig's rule ended in 421 CY. So that's not quite 200 years ago. Plus, I don't think he rose to demi-god status until sometime in the early 6th century CY. He was still mortal when he imprisioned Iuz in 505 CY. I think most Greyhawker's are pretty familiar with Zagig even if the current Greyhawk residents weren't alive during his rule.

That isn't quite true.

Us worshippers of Zagyg understand that our bodies are our temples.

And we become adventurers so that we can always keep them holey.
