| Fsi-Dib04-18-08, 02:02 AM | Talking about all the regions has made me think a bit. I know that in the US traveling between states and thus, regions, is relatively easy. Thus I merely ask what all regions have *you* been into? I'm slightly ashamed to tell I haven't ever played outside the Principality of Naerie. Then again, very few people from the US has ever played a scenario in Ahlissa (Germany), Bone March (Greece), Dullstrand (Switzerland), Ekbir (France), Naerie (Northern Europe), Onnwal (Ireland & UK), Sea Barons (Italy), or Sunndi (Benelux countries). I might talk about the language barriers, but not here. I'm asking merely because of curiosity. In case there's some sort of a LG convention at Geneve this year too, I might visit there and collect a few Ekbir/Dullstrand ARs. |

Yeomanry: Had a rustic, country feel to it. Ulek: Didn't see much of it (Tricon), but there were a lot of Dwarves. Gran March: Militaristic. Best weapon/armor access I've seen. |

This might be true for the eastern/middle states, but for me in the Pale, I need to travel 6 hours by car just to reach the nearest border (Nyrond). For a long time I had to travel 9 hours by plane to reach the nearest other region (Hawaii) - 14 hours to get to anywhere that was actually running games :P I can't complain now, though - I live in Boston for most of the year, and when I go home my city is right on the Perrenland/Ratik border :) Regions played in: Perrenland Ratik Bissel Keoland Theocracy of the Pale Dullstrand Ekbir Onnwal Sunndi Ahlissa Furyondy Shield Lands I've played metaregionals from, hmm, all five metaregions :) |

I've been to Sunndi and Onnwal in addition to Naerie. Played one module of each, so can't give much of an impression. The Onnwal one was dangerous, though, and my character found a nifty little book that ate a point of Wis and will get him executed if he goes back. It was awesome. |

The situation is pretty much as said. There's about 10-15 active LG players within the capital area of Finland, but then it's a loooong way to find others. I haven't heard of any games being played closer than Stockholm, I think. I also reckon there is *some* activity in the Northern Finland, but I haven't heard a single word out of them. All other places would require about 200€ to go to + hotel, and a lot more for transportation, not to mention the time consumed by all that. |

It's also the second official language of Finland, and we're all required to learn it at school. My Swedish isn't good enough to play with, though, and I expect we'd game in English. |
| Simpi04-20-08, 04:54 PM | Well, i've not really played much in my home region for obvious administrative reasons. Majority of my regionals are Onnwal modules which I played while studying in UK. I made a trip to Sunndi and played four regionals there. I also popped down to Bordercon in Geneva and played Dullstrand regionals there. Ekbir adventures were available as well but I never managed to play any but on the other hand I did play several VTF metaregionals. In GenCon UK i've managed to play regionals (in Open Fiesta) from Dullstrand, Keoland and Verbobonc. Both Keoland (Last Dance at Midnight) and Verbobonc (Sign of the Black Orchid) were quite interesting changes of pace for usual adventures, even though latters plot turned out to be ripped off from an episode of Babylon 5. Sampo Haarlaa Dalelands POC |
| kjenks04-20-08, 07:34 PM | ... even though latters plot turned out to be ripped off from an episode of Babylon 5. There are only a finite number of plots in fiction. Although I've played that mod, I haven't seen the corresponding episode of Bab5. But it's entirely possible that the plots are similar because there's nothing very new under the sun. There is a school of thought that there are no original plots subsequent to the ones established by classical Greek literature: 1) Orpheus - Love lost, love found, love lost again (Metamorphoses, Ovid) 2) Achilles - The character with the fatal flaw (The Iliad, Homer) 3) The Odyssey - A journey of discovery (Homer) The though is that, with the exception of Faust (vengeance) and Cinderella (women's fiction), all plots are a variation on Homer and Ovid. For example, Romeo and Juliet is a #1. Hamlet is a #2. Personally, I don't buy into that limited a set of categories. I think there are more plots to be found in modern fiction, but I understand the argument that many of these plots can be categorized into the classic few. Here's a list of 37 plot categories based on George Polti's work: Supplication (in which the Supplicant must beg something from Power in authority) Deliverance Crime Pursued by Vengeance Vengeance taken for kindred upon kindred Pursuit Disaster Falling Prey to Cruelty of Misfortune Revolt Daring Enterprise Abduction The Enigma (temptation or a riddle) Obtaining Enmity of Kinsmen Rivalry of Kinsmen Murderous Adultery Madness Fatal Imprudence Involuntary Crimes of Love (example: discovery that one has married one's mother, sister, etc.) Slaying of a Kinsman Unrecognized Self-Sacrificing for an Ideal Self-Sacrifice for Kindred All Sacrificed for Passion Necessity of Sacrificing Loved Ones Rivalry of Superior and Inferior Adultery Crimes of Love Discovery of the Dishonor of a Loved One Obstacles to Love An Enemy Loved Ambition Conflict with a God Mistaken Jealousy Erroneous Judgment Remorse Recovery of a Lost One Loss of Loved Ones Mistaken Identity All fictional plots that I can think of fit within those categories. Naturally, some forms of fiction have multiple plots. Foster-Harris claims that all plots stem from conflict and the general outline of a story is, "Exposition - Rising Action - Climax - Falling Action - Denouement." This seems to be true regardless of which plot one follows, but different fictional forms expand, shorten, interchange or even leave out some of the phases of the Foster-Harris outline. |
| Maesto04-20-08, 07:47 PM | Perrenland, Perrenland, Perrenland... Then they turned us into Ratik... Now I've gone countryhopping, I've played in Keoland, Bissel, and Furyondy too. Oh, there was a fiesta slot for the Bandit Kingdoms in there somewhere also. Metaregions? Iuz's Border States, Nyrond, and now the Sheldomar Valley. Hmm, I have family in Montreal... that's only 8 hours away... |

| Simpi04-21-08, 01:14 AM | There is a school of thought that there are no original plots subsequent to the ones established by classical Greek literature: What was your motivation to post this essay about Greek literature? Did it ever cross your mind that I might also be familiar with it or that as author of quite a few modules I might need to aware of such things? Anyway, Babylon 5 episode in question was Passing Through Gethsemane (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Passing_Through_Gethsemane). Sure there are differences in fine detailing* such as an elf standing in place of a Vorlon but we have a priest who was a black orchid murderer, underwent death of personality, is being stalked by relative of his victim and so on. There were enough similarities that once Babylon 5 connection was seen, module was completed relatively quickly. *Since you cannot have Shadow ship in Greyhawk, unless it happens to be a piece of Tharizduns nasal mucus.... And supposedly still the oldest written form found is integral calculus, go figure(on clay, design for irrigation canals in sumeria.) Though hamlet is a teutonic myth from around the 6th century(plagiarized) i think almost all 37 are covered, though i would consider it a Faust. | _metz_04-21-08, 08:16 AM | lol. I hear Katrick. I was in Armidale, which is pretty remote for Australia. So I have travelled quite far to play in the SAME region *just* to get interactives!!! Of course, not as far as Cairns (silly place) but then again Cairns has a beach/great barrier reef and doesn't snow in november (thats spring here) so no complaining to me. So... Perrenland, Perrenland, Perrenland, Ratik, then Perrenland again. Played a fiesta slot once, wasn't that great as we got no regional flavour (was set in a temple of Pelor, we have enough of those in Perrenland...) - Dave |

| Madfox1104-22-08, 03:47 AM | For obvious reasons I have not played in all that many regions, but lets mix regions I played and run adventures in: - Ahlissa (Innspa) - Dullstrand - Ekbir (plus virtually all VTF meta-regionals) - Geoff - Keoland - Onnwal - Sunndi Note that while the distances in Europe are much smaller than in Australia or USA, the real problem around here is the language barrier. Although to be honest, it is more of a mental barrier than a real one if you happen to be fluent enough in English to play D&D in that language. |

Noting that both Ahlissa (Adri/Innspa) and Ekbir scenarios are written in german and french, it doesn't make me more comfortable. I might consider one last LG trip to some relatively... fluent European country for my "one and only" non-Naerie module. I'm also very surprised how very very few have ever touched Naerie. I know only two Americans, Keith McCall and Stacey Redding, who have had the fortunate to play some of the scenarios. Though my knowledge is limited to those who have visited Finland. I don't know much about the activity in Sweden, Norway or Denmark, though I recollected hearing their activity is minimal or none at all. |
| Simpi04-22-08, 08:22 AM | I'm also very surprised how very very few have ever touched Naerie. Three Naerie modules have been ran in GenCon UK. One group of germans visited us as well and played all our intros, Y5 adventures and first three Y6 adventures. According to Swedish Triad, Onnwalian group visited him once (or was it twice) and authors Dan Hass and Steven Zwanger have run their own modules in the bigger US cons which had open slots. That to my knowledge is the extent of foreign people who have played Naerie, in addition to McCall and Redding. Sampo Haarlaa Naerie Triad |

| Lagrange, Baron de Banville04-22-08, 09:17 AM | Until last year, I've never played outside my own region (let alone metaregion), but thanks to some very kind people in Wisconsin I played a Highfolk-Regional, which was really fun. :D Apart from that I played Innspa/Adri-Regionals from year 1 to 3 and cores only since I became a Triad member in year 3... We've had quite some visitors from the United States and Europe over the years. Though our modules are written in German, I know we run English tables regularly at our most popular Gamedays and Cons. So if you come to Germany for some last chance to play LG this year, drop me a mail and I will see that I can organize something... |
| Black_Egg04-22-08, 05:20 PM | As he said, relatively easy. Over here, it involves crossing the Baltic Sea and one or more national borders - unless you count the Russian border, and there's no game to be had there. I'll admit that travel among the regions in the Western US is a lot easier than that, but it's still difficult enough to discourge all but frequent con-goers from engaging in it regularly. * I live in Nyrond. * I've been to the County of Urnst once before and I'm making one last trip there at the beginning of next month. This is the one region outside of Nyrond that I think I'm starting to actually understand a little. * I got a Duchy game in when I visited my sister in the Seattle area. * I went to NeonCon last year, so I snagged a few Pale mods. That's it...just Nyrond and her metaregions play for me. (And Core of course) The people you see posting lots of out-of-region play are either big con goers or live in a more dense RPGA area. |

It means you need to arrange things in advance as opposed to visiting a convention without a warning to the organizers. There are French and even more German players fluent enough in Englsh to run a game. You just need to make sure they are all sitting at the same table ;) |
| bitznarf04-23-08, 01:23 PM | I've played in... The Sultanate of Zief The Duchy of Urnst The Pale The Kingdom of Nyrond The Iuz Border States (just one IUZ mod, no regionals, yet.) Playing in the Shieldlands is in the works though - and perhaps some more Pale mods. |
| AugdenKhos04-23-08, 02:22 PM | Keoland I mean, why go anywhere else? Seriously. |
| bitznarf04-23-08, 06:11 PM | Keoland I mean, why go anywhere else? Seriously. Because there are only so many play opportunities in Keoland ;) One runs out mods to play. |
| katrick04-29-08, 11:42 AM | And we've outsourced a great deal of playtesting to Australia, though naturally they don't get ARs for it. Three so far, and all very good, though i'm sure we miss some regional flavour. As said before i haven't left my region(except ratik) though i've played some outer mods Tusmit(Wizards of mass destuction) Shield lands(iuz strikes back) bandit Kingdoms(Scales and secrets) Nyrond(Borne on an ill wind) Dullstrand(the sea devils) All excellent Mods, thank you authors. katrick |
| Lupo04-29-08, 01:14 PM | innspa/ahlisaa (home region) sunndi - really felt at home there, met a lot of interesting players from other regions over a very enjoyabel stretch of time. ekbir - still trying my rusted school french on the ARs ;-) dullstrand - at great great bordercon naeri/ahlissa - co-ahlissans are soooo different :-) but the trip and gaming was fun organized and dmed some visiting parties and enjoyed it as well. sadly never made it to onnwal :-( maybe still possible ciao martin m. |

Did the judge get to play it before running it? I'm curious how that one went over. |

It's a long mod that struggled to get finished in the slot but a good time seemed to be had by all who played it. :) Joe |
| katrick05-08-08, 11:10 PM | I noticed that there was an Australian table of Iuz Strikes Back organized as a Fiesta slot. Did the judge get to play it before running it? I'm curious how that one went over. The first fight was real quick so we attacked all the other groups along the line. The second(untiered)was rougher, the druid whipped out a bag of tricks, his Giant Owl, and Dire Ape, the halflings dog and presto Animal Growth, scrolls of protection from arrows, so it was get the main two and wait for the next wave, after about the fourth wave we actually got into melee, and maybe 5 or six when i think a Mass Fly got us out. The guy at the end nearly TPKéd us with the Evards, but once we got out of the Evards he was easy prey. Andy really loved running it. katrick A real mod for a Paladin, tee hee. |
| solbergb05-09-08, 01:11 PM | Problem is that the others might not be so fluent. I am not very convinced by almost any of the Indo-European linguistical capabilities. Noting that both Ahlissa (Adri/Innspa) and Ekbir scenarios are written in german and french, it doesn't make me more comfortable. Yes. I've been to a convention in Ontario, Canada which had a mix of "mostly french" and "mostly english" tables. I got a feel for what the french-speakers felt at an english table during a midnight madness where I was at a french table. You could pretty much tell what was happening and communicate your own moves, because it is, after all, D&D and the context is strong. But anything subtle or complicated required whomever had the best english (or french in the case of mostly english tables) to communicate to the guy with poor (or in my case nonexistant) language skills of the dominant language. There is also the matter of when you want to do something like "shoot into the grapple" with nonlethal arrows and need to be sure the GM understands NONLETHAL heh. (it's kinda funny if the player grappled does not understand..) |

At one table I judged, the paladin refused to abandon the battlefront and stayed behind to defend as many people as he could. I don't recall exactly what we determined -- but I think his death was recoverable. Quite heroic. There were certainly opportunities for heroic behavior -- though they weren't all well-advised ;-) |

| TetsujinOni05-11-08, 09:49 PM | I was speaking about my charactor and NO LIKES THE GRAMMAR POLICE :D Right, this was all about the grammar police. No, wait, it was about the difference between the region which is asserted as the setting of an adventure, versus the region assigned to the physical location in which the player was playing. The questions are vastly different, and the curiosity about where you've been is the one which I believe has been of interest for the thread. No grammar questions there - though I am quite curious, now. Making the question explicit: regarding mod codes: I know Vamroc has KEO, SHE, COR, and ADP ARs... any other ones? |

| Hariman05-11-08, 11:44 PM | Keoland, The Sheldomar Valley |
| Fsi-Dib05-17-08, 05:54 PM | So, Vamroc, you still haven't listed what regions you have physically visited? I doubt people are as interested to know where your characters have been (since with most all regions are covered then). Though you still don't have any adventures set in the Principality of Naerie. :) |
