| hand over fist04-13-06, 02:47 AM | The players hand book is kinda fuzzy on the saving throw for the SILENCE spell. It saiz "Will negates, see text or none(object)." So if you cast it on a "point in space" and there is a wizard "in" that point in space does he get a saving throw? Or, because he can move out of the space does he only get a save its it is directly cast upon him? Do tell.... :) |
| Novacat04-13-06, 02:56 AM | A creature only gets a saving throw to resist a Silence spell targeting that creature. |
| hand over fist04-13-06, 11:56 AM | So...wizard in area of spell effect no save. Spell targeted directly at wizard...yes save? Right??? |
| karthos04-13-06, 12:03 PM | That is correct, makes for one heck of a spell interupter provided the spell has a verbal component. |
| limbodog04-13-06, 03:20 PM | The way I work it out is this: If you want to have it follow the wizard around in any way, you need to cast it on the Wizard and he gets a save. (that includes casting it on his toe ring etc.) If you don't mind it being 100% stationary, cast in on the object near him. |

What about palming a silenced item off of him, or silencing an arrow and hitting him with it? Or a silenced tanglefoot bag? |
| jaelis04-13-06, 03:50 PM | Arrows and tanglefoot bags are destroyed on a hit, so technically that doesn't work. The palming thing is fine, but probably harder to pull off. |
| Johnny Cache04-13-06, 03:58 PM | What about palming a silenced item off of him, or silencing an arrow and hitting him with it? Or a silenced tanglefoot bag? :heehee Beautiful! Here's an idea - use a bola or a net thrown by the party's rogue or fighter. Then you stop his use of somantic components, also. |
| Dungeon Master04-19-06, 04:55 PM | or cast silence on the party fighter and grapple the poor guy/girl. |
| hand over fist04-24-06, 03:50 PM | Well, the guys in my group arent convinced that casting silence on a brick within the 20' spread area that the "target" is standing in DOES NOT allow the caster within the area of effect a save against the spell effect...They read the spell description and still dont buy it. They still think that no matter what, you get a save against the spells effect be it casted on the target or an item near the target. Frankly, I'm not 100% sure myself. 1) Again, if the caster is a 40th level wizard/cleric/sorcerer(or whatever) and they are standing near a small stone that has the silence spell casted upon it, the caster DOES NOT GET A SAVE???? He or she or it cannot use verbal actions to cast?????? Correct? 2) BUT if the spell is TARGETING the caster directly they do get a save against the effects????? Is there any actual eratta out there that makes this black and white? Please give you opinion and the facts you feel back it up. :D Thanks! |

Is there any actual eratta out there that makes this black and white? There's no need for errata. It really doesn't get any more black and white than the spell description itself. |
| Vaelan04-24-06, 06:02 PM | Arrows and tanglefoot bags are destroyed on a hit, so technically that doesn't work. And you can justify this within the rules how? Magic items lose their properties when they are destroyed, but Silence doesn't make the object it targets magic item; the item is merely the center of the effect. |

You'd now have a broken arrow that is silenced. (but, by the RAW, arrows dont stick into people, so there's nothing to say he couldnt move away from it). In any case, my favored target of silence spells: My familiar. Have it hover around the other spellcaster, holding its action to follow them if they move. |
| DaMullet04-24-06, 09:45 PM | Now... Where would the silence then be cast, the shaft or the head? Does it matter? Could you argue that the head is stuck inside his shoulder and therefore then the spell follows him? Etc. Etc. Etc. I do like the Silenced net. That's a good one. |
| hand over fist04-24-06, 10:13 PM | Hello? Instead of using this post to argue if an arrow can be used in another situation...can I get some feedback on the posts actual question? |
| Dunamin04-25-06, 03:05 AM | Hey hand over fist. I started a new thread some time ago that answers your question, and have only just now seen this one. Sorry. Anyway, I'm sure all your questions are addressed: http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?t=626535 |
