Are you looking at a piticular class Cleric, Wiz/ Sor, Druid etc.

Cure Minor Wounds: It stabilizes a creature even if it doesn't necesarily bring them back to there feet.

Create Water: Creates large amounts of water. Witch can be vital by itself in dessert locations. Can also be used like a poor mans quench. Not nearly as good but it should help to fight fires.

Detect Magic: It is a vital spell for any casting class. Can be used to determine the placement of magical traps. Find the square of a magicly invisible target. Can determine the usefulness of using a dispel magic on a target.

Prestidigitation: Alot of minor effects that can come in handy in a roleplaying sense and can allow some minor contribution in combat. such as pinpointing the square of a invisible target by soiling the floor for example.

Arcane Mark: Is necessary for a couple of spells. The spell itself can be used to good effect alone as well. If you have the advantage of foreknowledge place the invisible version of the mark on your friends when there is the possiblity of infiltration by shape shifters. This spell has many uses in a espionage based game.

That is by no means a exhaustive list especially if you include other sources beyond the PHB but it should give you something to start with.

Read Magic is also nice. It lets you identify scrolls and other magical writings.

Detect Poison is also nice. If you're paranoid, you'll cast it each time you eat or drink something.

A rogue mage can sneak attack with a ranged touch attack instead of a regular ranged attack, using acid splash or ray of frost.
Ray of frost can also extinguish torches/candles/lamps. Helpful if you have darkvision or a means thereto and your enemy doesn't.

Open/close. For when there isn't a rogue to disable that trapped door or chest. You can let the trap spring from afar.

Silent Portal is also a good spell.

On an adventure, I find I use the following a LOT

Detect Magic
Read Magic (find out what that scroll is)
Dancing Lights (Light up the bad guys, not yourself)
Mage Hand (I am NOT touching that door handle covered in slime.)

Clerics/Druids like
Detect
Read Magic
Cure Minor Wounds (great to stop bleeding, particularly on a bad guy you want captured)
Create Water
Purify Food and Drink.

Open/Close and Mage Hand are very good for opening traps from afar.

Also detect magic has many many uses.

Never underestimate the effectiveness of an acid splash or a ray of frost against a Kobold or goblin.

Acid splash is great for locks and the sides of chests.

I keep my slots full of Detect Magic... I use it find magically concealed traps and doors as well as searching for what gear to loot and what to leave behind.

Cantrips make a great magic show.

Ray of Frost to turn any small object (vegetable matter works much better for this) into a crystalline version of itself. Makes pretty gifts.

You can even make ice with it (lol).

Dancing Lights is a level 1 spell in my game.

Then there's um..... Flare, which creates a flash of bright light. It doesn't have to target creature; in fact, you cast it in front of people's eyes to blind them, but there are other uses (like signalling people.... as though with a FLARE).

Dancing Lights can also make up to four glowing spheres of light (which look like will-o’-wisps), or one faintly glowing, vaguely humanoid shape. I've had good luck sending the humanoid shape into a room ahead of the party. It tends to trigger readied actions from lurking enemies, modifying their surprise round tactics. I've had trolls chase the lights around for a couple of rounds while the party gets into position, casts spells and chugs potions. Once, I had a scorpion chasing one all over the place while the party shot the bug full of arrows. Lots of fun.
