what do you guys use your 0 lvl cleric spells for as you go up in level since they become more useless the higher the level.

Light is always useful. Cure Minor Wounds is good for stabilizing an enemy you don't want conscious, but want to question later.

Things like Read Magic, Detect Magic, Detect Poison, and Light can still be useful at higher levels, though wands for these spells are typically pretty damn cheap.

Still, at most, you only prepare a few orisons, and the caster-level, duration, etc. is still all better when you cast the spells yourself.

Guidance is always useful.

The same things I use them for when I am low level. Simple utility.
Lighting a room.
Reading magic.
Detecting magic.
Creating ghost sounds.
Grabbing keys off the hook across the room.
Messaging a guard from a hiding place.
Inscribing runes on my belongings.

0 lvl spells exist for fun and utility as has been described. They are roll playing devices more than useful spells.

They are roll playing devices more than useful spells.Just quibbling with spelling and semantics here, but...

"They are role-playing devices" is probably what you meant.
Further, they are quite useful; just not very combat-oriented.

In my current game I have gotten more then the standard use out of 0 level spells.

How do you know if there is something magical in the room? Detect Magic
What do you drink when all the water around is poisoned? Create water
What do you do to look around the dark cavern ahead of the party? Light

0-level spells have there uses just not in combat.

Spell compendium also has a few neat 0-level spells.
Dawn for Druids for when they need to wake the party members up in a hurry.
Amanuensis is for Clerics and Wizards who want to copy normal text from one source to another.
Stick for that joking Wizard/Sorcerer who wants to put that Kick me sign on the back of the party fighter.

Larry mentioned Amanuensis. this is pivotal. it used to be 3rd level and i'm not sure it should be an Orison. i mean, consider all the infinite possibilities. copying enemy maps/intel w/out having to steal them. cartographers and scribes make a lot of money for a good reason. it's hard, time consuming, an not just a science, but an art. coupled w/ Mending and your rogue's Bluff and/or Forgery, you are one serious agent provacateur...
-Mending: this is very important as it takes a while to restring an easilly cut, sundered, whatever, bow string. torn or damaged outfit at the gala? restoring a ripped illuminated manuscript or holy text? etc. etc.
-Dect. Magic: often the only way to determine an invisible intruder. magic treasure that doesn't look like much $ at first (Iron Flask, anything glammered, etc.).
-Light: c'mon...being blind is being flat-footed (or is it Dex loss?)

1 Ton Ghost you appearently didn't read your spells. Amanuensis only copies text so it couldn't copy a map unless you only wanted the words off the map. But the spell still does xerox all none magical text. Though if you use the spell with the limits it can still be useful.

bugman1964,

0-lvl spells are still extremely useful, even at higher levels.

Create Water. Saves carrying 2lbs of water per person per day. Also useful for putting out fires.

Cure Minor Wounds. Not that you memorize it, but still useful in stablizing enemies without making them concious.

Detect Magic. A must. Useful in detecting magical traps, finding treasure, detecting spells on folks, and often identifying magical items -- the school often gives you a good idea what the item is. How many "conjuration" potions aren't curing?

Detect Poison. Saves you from 'testing' poison potions, can help in detecting some traps, and ensures that your food is safe to eat at the inn.

Light. A must. Always handy even if you have continual flame. I like putting it on arrows so that archers can fire arrows ahead. Useful on coins dropped down pits or as a backup when someone dispells your continue flames. Faster than taking out a torch, taking out flint and steal, and then lighting it.

Mending. Can be useful for torn pages, minor damage to simple objects, etc.

Purify Food and Drink. Extremely useful during wilderness travel.

Read Magic. A must. Saves spellcraft checks (and time) in indentifying scrolls or spells within spellbooks. Often means the difference between using a scroll during the adventure or not. Also many places have magical writings.

I use all the detection spells all the time.
Purify food and drink...always a good one.

apprciated. perhaps i should've illustrated more clearly the MO of spying in this capacity though i thought you and the others could figure it out. but yes, you are quite right in that it's text only.
why is that anyway?
i don't see how a schematic would necessarilly break the Orision spell lvl of worth. i mean, if you have the hardcopy anyway, you could just steal it. how are pictographs, hieroglyphs, etchings, etc., not covered in the the aegis of the spell?

text only; this is the pertinent intel on captured maps, drawing in a few contours, a well known river, etc. are secondary and can be concluded in typical fashion when compared to PC or allied maps. i mean, it wouldn't take alot of time for the enemy to deduce "this here is Lonely Mountain", but the scrawling in goblinoid near it suggests 2 divisions of infantry or the archetypal secret door.

Prestidigitation is limited only by creativity and the a DM.

Presti is a 1st level spell, not a 0 level, though. Also, as pointed out, Arcane only.

I suppose you could play one of my Kitsune (http://forums.gleemax.com/showthread.php?t=945329) as a Cleric. Then you get divine spellcasting, and Prestidigitation at will!

Um, all of my Sorceror and Wizard characters disagree with you. Prestidigitation is 0-level, though it *is* Arcane only. Isn't there Cleric domain that grants Prestidigitation as a Domain bonus ability?

...You're right. I thought it was first level, for some reason. Ah well.
