| CheetahF1401-11-07, 07:23 PM | In the DMG there is an ioun stone that gives you a +1 bonus to caster level (no bonus type specified), and it gives no limit on the number of ioun stones you can have on your person at one time. So can you get two of these ioun stones to get a cumulative +2 bonus to CL? The bonus to CL isn't typed, so it would normally stack, but then again, casting haste multiple times doesn't give you multiple untyped bonuses to attack. But if you can't get a higher CL from multiple ioun stones, how can a wizard increase his caster level (either in general or just versus SR) aside from the robe of the archmagi, the archmage prestige class, and the feats spell penetration and greater spell penetration? |
| Damned slayer01-11-07, 07:26 PM | unnamed bonus from DIFFERENT sources stack so no you dont stack them that way |
| CheetahF1401-11-07, 07:32 PM | but what about two rings of +1 CL from the complete mage? They wouldn't stack either? |
| WinterPsionic01-11-07, 07:56 PM | but what about two rings of +1 CL from the complete mage? They wouldn't stack either? It is my understanding that they would not. |
| Vegepygmy01-11-07, 08:05 PM | stack: Combine for a cumulative effect. In most cases, modifiers to a given check or roll stack if they come from different sources and have different descriptors (or no descriptors at all), but do not stack if they have the same descriptors or come from the same source (such as the same spell cast twice in succession). If the modifiers to a particular roll do not stack, only the best bonus or worst penalty applies. Dodge bonuses and circumstance bonus however, do stack with one another unless otherwise specified. Spell effected that do not stack may overlap, coexist independently, or render one another irrelevant, depending on their exact effects. Two ioun stones that do the same thing is like "the same spell cast twice in succession," so no, it would not stack (and neither would the rings from Complete Mage, I assume). |
| Iabes_Q_c_a_Mahorella01-11-07, 09:06 PM | there's a few feats (I think) that bump CR for a few spells or a subset of spells in PHB2 and Complete Mage and Complete Arcane. |
| WinterPsionic01-11-07, 09:29 PM | there's a few feats (I think) that bump CR for a few spells or a subset of spells in PHB2 and Complete Mage and Complete Arcane. 1.CR? Caster Rank? Casting Ruckus? Cactus Run? 2. The only ones that actually increase anything are the reserve in CM that have a secondary effect of increasing the DC or CL by 1(can't remeber which) for spells of that element. Not familiar enough with PHB2 so I suppose there could be something there. For the purpose of bypassing SR your only real options are Spell Pen, Greater Spell Pen and maybe a wand of Assay Spell Resistance...with the obvious exception of going up in CL or casting spells that bypass SR. |
| dirkformica01-11-07, 11:13 PM | but what about two rings of +1 CL from the complete mage? They wouldn't stack either? Looks like the ring in question is from Complete Arcane, not Complete Mage. It's on page 144 and is called a ring of Arcane Might. Two of these rings wouldn't stack, but I don't see why the ring wouldn't stack with the Ioun stone. Edit: and the ring is cheaper too at only 20,000. But it does use a body slot and is arcane only. Then again, it's more difficult to snatch someone's ring than to grab an orbiting stone. |
| MarrowMage01-11-07, 11:24 PM | there are also plenty of ways to up caster level in a specific school or descriptor of spell...red wizard comes to mind for schools |
