noob question

my friend is a warmage. he crossclasses into Eldritch Knight. he says that the title above means he gets higher class spells ( meaning that the whole +1 level of existing arcane spellcasting class not only means he gains more spells per day, but he also attains higher level spells). the DM says no, that he only gets the more spells per day and doesn't gain any higher level spells (such as when he started the class for example and he had 3rd level spells, after a while in EK, he'd gain 4th and so on)

who's right here?

Your DM is completly wrong. The player gains spells, and spells only, as if he had taken another level in Warmage every time he gains a level where it states +1 Level of existing arcane spellcasting class. This include spells known, spells per day and spell level but not any other class feature like Warmage Edge, Advanced Learning or free Sudden Metamagic feats.

You get both spells known and spells per day when leveling in PrCs that give that ability. Your DM is dead wrong.

Your DM is totaly CORRECT... oh... wait... you're serious? Hm... okay. But... I do see why the DM is confused. Looking at the SRD it does say

From 2nd level on, when a new eldritch knight level is gained, the character gains new spells per day as if she had also gained a level in whatever arcane spellcasting class she belonged to before she added the prestige class. She does not, however, gain any other benefit a character of that class would have gained. This essentially means that she adds the level of eldritch knight to the level of whatever other arcane spellcasting class the character has, then determines spells per day and caster level accordingly.

SO! The DM took this as literaly, but I'm sure this is just a typo. Everyone else is correct in that he would gain spells per day PLUS spells known. If he doesn't believe it, then look up another PrC with that ability and most of them say both spells per day and spells known.

This is most probably indeed just an omission. Almost every prestige class grants both.
