| Wonton200607-14-06, 11:52 AM | Sort of a continuation of my other thread in Equipment and Combat. Since Magic Weapon gives a +1 enhancement bonus to attack rolls and damage rolls with the weapon, that would make it near useless for all weapons that are masterwork or better. Am I correct? Greater Magic Weapon gives a +1 bonus for every four caster levels. That would not stack with the weapon's normal enhancement bonus from being +1 or from being masterwork, right? So, yet again, almost useless at levels 7 and below. At level 8, however, let's say I cast it on the Rogue's +1 Rapier. That would only make it a +2 Rapier, right? There are currently 3 enhancement bonuses on attack rolls for that rapier, but they're all overlapping: +1 from Masterwork, +1 from +1, +2 from GMW. Lastly, would casting MW on a weapon allow me to bypass DR of xx/magic? Sorry for the rant, just trying to get things cleared up here. |

Typically you up until level 8, you only cast it on a NORMAL weapon, not a Masterwork. 3) But yes, both Magic Weapon and GMW do make a spell magical, so it WILL defeat DR x/magic, no matter how high x is. Up until level 7 on GMW, this is the major use for GMW. |

Am I correct?I wouldn't call it near usless, it is about half as effective when used on a masterwork weapon as far as bonus granted is concerned, giving it an additional +1 to damage. it also allows that weapon to by pass DR x/magic, which IMO is the real purpose of the spell, and in that regard it is not useless at all. |

At high levels, it's really good for allowing you to cram more abilities onto your weapon while still getting the enhancement bonus you need. For example, you can have a weapon that's +1 with +9 worth of abilities (stuff like keen, flaming, ghost touch, etc), then cast GMW on it and you have a high enhancement bonus and al lthe abilities. |

You could probably also enchant the weapon itself with the Greater Magic Weapon spell as a spell-like ability, x times/day. That would make the sword even "sweeter" (god, I hate that word), huh? Seriously, though, I don't see why not...though you'd probably pay up the nose for it. :) |
