Hi guys,

How does this work? Can a Huge Dragon cast Lesser Globe of Invulnerability or Antilife Shell to protect himself?

Thanks,

Imo yes, but that is debatable.

10 ft. emanation means that the spell effect emanates up to 10 ft. away from you and only because "you" is larger then a 5ftx5ft square that doesn't change.

It would offer no protection, since parts of the dragon would still stick out like sore thumbs.

Same goes with spells like anti-life shield. If the monster is too big, the spell works as normal, but it can't get the full benefits.

If the monster is too big, the spell works as normal

But working normal means emanating from the creature, not from inside the creature.

What you describe would be a sphere spell with a 10 ft radius centered on the creature, but no emanation.

Sphere:

X X
XXX XXX
XXCXX XXCCX
XXX XCC
X X

Emanation:

X XX
XXX XXXX
XXCXX XXCCXX
XXX XXCCXX
X XXXX
XX

X=Field
C=Creature

Emanations are centered on grid intersections. Not on squares.

That might change your views, Derren.

The creature can, at any time be at any location inside the area it occupies (as that is the area it needs to fight effectively, not the area its body occupies) and that also means that the emanation at any time emanates from every intersection inside or next to this area.

So if you have a fixed Sphere spell like Sphere of Invulnerability you choose on grid intersection for the spell and if the creature is inside the effect it is protected.

If the spell is a emanation which is centered and moves with a creature then the spell emanates from all grid intersection the creature area touches.

My view is that they're centered on a grid intersection in the creature's space.

Antimagic Field gives us a precedent: Should a creature be larger than the area enclosed by the barrier, any part of it that lies outside the barrier is unaffected by the field.

That implies that it is possible to not completely be covered by it. In other words, that it doesn't emanate 10ft. from you, but from a point in space.

My view is that they're centered on a grid intersection in the creature's space.

And I say that, as a creature constantly moves around inside its space the spell is centered on all intersection inside (&around) the creature's space.

That simply makes more sense and reduces complexity.

How do you explain the quoted part then?

Its a special thing for the Antimagic Field as all other AntiX spells do not have such a part. That, or it is simply an error or a holdover from 3.0 where the space was really the minimum space the creature occupies.
