in honor of http://www.dominic-deegan.com I would like to gains some ideas as to how one can defeat enemies or help allies in a fight (or to avoid a fight) through the use of passive spells

1) Use an Illusion of a large creature charging an enemy as cover for a rogue comming in for a sneak attack. Enemy tries to dodge the attack, and braces for the impact of the fist to face attack. It goes right through him and while he is thinking "What the hell happend" he gets stabbed

2) Directly stole from Dominic Deegan, Use vetriliquism to make the enemy think you are just an illusion opening them up for an attack. Perhaps combine with ghost sound to provide this effect for an allie

3) combine Invisibility with vetriliquism to make it seem like you are showing off your teleporting ability while in reality you are either sneaking up on them or running away, or something else

4) If you know that enemies are closing on you, cast the illusion of a bridge over a great rift in the ground and watch them fall

5) Reflect Spell: it's not really passive but them kill themselves with their spell

6) Master of Counterspelling, counterspell: as 5)

7) As they are coming for you (while indoors) cast a gate leading to the throne room of the City of Brass just between you and them. As they start to cast fireballs to you, then end to the throne room and **** off the Great Efreeti ( cr60+), who sends some minion to bring them to him.

not sure if this counts as passive or not.

This requires 2 spellcasters or 1 with quicken spell. cast passwall under an enemy and when it falls have the other caster use a his readyed action to cast wall of stone over the passwall pit. when the passwall spell expires...SPLAT.

0th level spells...

8) Use Mage Hand to pull the lever on, or otherwise activate, a trap
9) Use Open/Close to open a fire trap near the enemy

1st level spells...

10) Use Obscuring Mist at a cliff/pit, then run into the mist and step to the side. Pursuers plummet.
11) Use Grease on the wall or rope someone's climbing.
12) Use Enlarge Person on someone who's standing on a tree branch, rickety bridge, thin ice, or riding a galloping horse.

13) Us a mist or concealment spell combined with an illusion to make you (and/or your party) look like the enemy. Hmm, I wonder if there are any glamor spells that can make your enemy look like you.

If you're on your home ground, there are lots of ways in which passive spells can be put to good use. I had a character (back in those long-lost days when I used to get to play occasionally rather than constantly running campaigns) who rather regarded Antimagic Shell (2e) as his Achilles heel. As such, he had many significant portions of his home held up entirely by magic.

It was cunningly designed such that anybody using Antimagic in the area actually couldn't progess, and if they suddenly switched it on without a nonmagical means of flying they were usually heavily discommoded by falling into pits of green slime and the like.

Another way of using magic is to ensure that people couldn't progress in a turning-the-whole-thing-on-its-head sort of way was the devising of certain spells which would both allow you access to his sanctum AND put you under his control. For instance, he had anti-teleport magics all over the place and there was one area that could only be reached by the use of a specific spell, triggered when you went through a portal. The save vs. spell (ah, those were the [very confusing] days) applied to the whole spell so you either arrived Dominated or not at all.

Of course, some of these tactics wouldn't work in the same way under 3e, but it's a useful way of thinking about how to turn situations around.

The same character used the 2e version of Ghost Sounds to cause a riot in a giant/ogre encampment. He spoke Giant and so was able to get a load of them fighting each other by hurling random insults and using the odd bit of subtle illusion to make it look like they were making rude gestures at each other and the like. It wouldn't have worked with cleverer creatures, but whilst the boss giant was banging heads together to sort out the problem, my character slipped into his tent and robbed him blind :D

My direct contribution: something I was thinking of setting up in the low-level campaign I'm running, related to 8)

14) Prestidigitation can lift one pound of "whatever" slowly into the air. Of course, once you let it go, it doesn't move slowly at all. Drop your 1-lb object onto a pressure plate or set of scales hooked up to a trap...

It's another way of having an NPC deal with PC's much more powerful than him (at low levels) "This room is set to explode / the roof will fall on our heads / we will all die horribly the second I stop concentrating. I can do that faster than you can stop me, so how about we all just back... off...?"

You might throw your players into a swivet long enough for your lowly bad guy to escape, particularly if they've got a reason to think he's not bluffing!

I once heard a story about a DM who killed his entire 10th level party with a few kobolds, one of whom was a sorcerer, by doing the following:

15) Get your enemy to chase you through a narrow tunnel, barely big enough for you to fit through. Preferably one with a slight upward incline. Once safely out the other side, promptly cast enlarge person on the opponent, which should get him stuck at least temporarily. Then flood the tunnel.

The other kobolds quickly built a big bonfire at the bottom end of the tunnel, preventing any escape that way.

19) use suggestion or charm person to convince someone not to "resist" and then teleport both of you (or him) someplace dangerous... Hmm, is it possible to teleport...up. Yes I think it is. 100 miles up please.

I read this someplace, not sure if it is exactly by the rules, still...

20) Cast Rope Trick, fill the extradimensional space with Alchemist's Fire (and other dangerous substances) and perhaps your group's Enraged Barbarian, then lure your enemies below it as you dismiss the spell.
