| mvincent10-12-06, 06:34 PM | We all know that magic items cost huge amounts to craft, with most of that money going towards generic "magic supplies" that are expended during the process (this also applies to the "materials for writing a spell into a spellbook cost 100 gp per page" rule). I'd like to start a list of some ideas of where this money might go to: 1) Special inks (possibly made from previous metals like silver, powered gems, and/or the blood of some rare beast) 2) Special candles (may give off light that makes some items visible, like the flashlights on CSI) 3) Critter bits (special hides, bones teeth etc. from a creature that is connected somehow to the item being crafted). 4) Expensive material components like those listed for spells 5) Bribes to other mages or religious organizations ideas? "Magic requires expensive special materials. It doesn't really matter what the material is, so long as it's expensive. See, magic is an art rather than a science, and art supplies cost a lot. The theory is that the magic is more a product of the practitioner's belief than scientific causality (i.e. the "thought is the basis of all reality" notion). And believe me brother, nothing increases your belief like dropping a massload of coin just to scribe a single Word of Power." |

Consumption of special foods or scent of certain incenses to put your mind in a special trance that allows the transfer of magic from you to the item to stay in a special 'suspended animation' of sorts. |
