As the thread said this is a list for tricks Illusionists can do with illusion spells... I'll start off with a few.

1. Trap stupid drow fighters with SR in an imaginary cage, (low DC though, thats why your a gnome illusionist with greater spell focus)

2. Create an illusionary wall of wood the sprouts out of the ground that opens up when allies go through but no one else, only helpful against archers though.

3.Create an illusionary strip club, disguise self as a half orc bouncer and enforce a NO TOUCHING rule, charge 1 cp to enter, while the male population is out of the the village do what ever you have to do their. (Pillage, find artifact so on and so fourth.)

one word: ventriloquism

You can do so much with it. It's one of the best first level spells.

You can issue false orders to the enemy during combat, espeically a dumb enemy like orcs.

You can taunt bouncers, guards, and nobles without taking the blame, maybe even causing them to act rashly.

You can scare someone.

You can distract individuals or groups for a moment (like as you're sneaking out of jail...)

There's more. It's a wonderful spell.

4. Could you possibly create an illusion of a high level spell such as a wall of blades or a fire shield out of sight (to avoid enemy spellcasters spellcraft rolls), and then bluff the enemies into thinking you're a mage of far higher powers than they suspect. Watch as the int 7 mercenaries think twice about getting into melee with the gnome with a supposed fire shield and shield of blades whirling around him.

5. Bribing away the enemies with non-existent gold or platinum. WOuldn't take that much to make some cp look like pp, and if they don't have appraise, how would they know the physical difference between these coins?

6. The old doctor who trick of 'psychic authority paper.' Just create an illusion of an official membership card to the town guard, elite lg mercenary group or knightly order on a hard bit of paper, hold it in your wallet and flash it at town guards, commoners and anyone else that wouldn't normally let you into the crime scene/enemy base/dungeon area.

7. For nastier adventurers, most enemy adventurers are far less likely to attack someone that has a knife to their illusionary loved ones throat. Sure, they know that you are a illusionist, but if the risk to being wrong is their daughter Suzy dead, they're far more likely to give into forced negotiations. OR I'LL CUT HER FROM EAR TO EAR, KYA-HAH-HAAAR.

8. Cast an illusion of the Paladin's armour and clothes slowly dissolving just as you walk into town.

9. Fake your death with an illusionary arrow and a cliff. Be sure to have Featherfall prepared. >_^

10. Summon the Tarrasque!

10. In a siege summon a dragon, does nothing but will draw off fire from the crazy cannons enemies have

11. Create a hole around enemies, this should stop em moving.

Ok, I will number the ones I did before and add a couple. These are all for low level illusionists as more powerful illusionists can do a lot of these things more easily.

12. With ventriloquism you can issue false orders to the enemy during combat, especially a dumb enemy like orcs. "Hey, focus on the Barbarian, *not* the wizard! That's an an order". :) For a first level spell it can really save your hide if used properly.

13. With ventriloquism combined with silent image you can make a full-fledged walking, talking replica of any humanoid that speaks your language. This is a potent combo. You then make a copy of the local Earl and have him walk you into the castle and order a major disbursement from his treasury ... to your first-level self of course.

14. Magic Aura is great for con artists.
Step 1: Get a masterwork sword.
Step 2: Put magic aura to make it seem a +4 Frost Sword!
Step 3: Find a magical appraiser and hope he fails his Will save.
Step 4: If you negotiate well, you now can afford to go buy a +4 Frost Sword!

15: EDIT: You are held prisoner. You can pick the lock, or break the chains or whatever, but you can't get past all the guards. So every day for several weeks you send an illusion or two of yourself walking around free in the confines. The first day the guards panic etc. etc. but eventually they just get used to it, simply making sure you are still in your place as the illusion walks out. Then after several weeks you just walk out, a free man, without any need to fight or sneak out, as the guards all yawn and ignore yet another illusion, except this time the illusion is the one still in the cell.

16: illusory script acts as cryptography for an army. You employ a bunch of illusionists to cast illusory script on your written communications. Your battlefield communications are secure since *only* the intended recipient can read the script. Espionage operatives will also live and die by this spell.

Got this idea from the prison break trick.

17. You can make a good living providing an alibi to criminals or powerful lords/merchant/whatever who want to be able to act freely without getting blamed for what happened while they were out. Perhaps the local noble has an affair. He hires you do run a major image of him sulking in the corner by himself at the ball while he's upstairs... having a ball. Or a master thief criminal knows that authorities are watching him and blame him for every crime in town so he arranges for you to run a major image of him drinking in the tavern all night with a known acquantaince while he robs the police payroll that night.....

I don't know why I keep thinking of these and bumping the thread but anyway,

18. The Frighteners Trick
If you know the movie The Frighteners, an illusionist could a good living doing this. Scare the bejesus out of some rich merchant by making ghost illusions that are "haunting" his house. All it takes is silent image or minor image and maybe a few ghost sound cantrips.

All you have to do is show up and pretend to do an excorcism and you get paid.

This little trick can be done in a huge humber of different ways, but here is one:

1. Cast Rainbow Pattern on a large number of enemies within the area of the spell.

2. Make them follow the Rainbow Pattern and do no harm to them.

3. Cast Hallucinatory Terrain near a cliff, volcano, marsh, etc.

4. Move the Rainbow Pattern into the effect of the Hallucinatory Terrain.

5. Enjoy the show.

This can be repeated to get a lot of different enemies. Since one enemy not failing their will saves will not end the spell, it can be a lethal move in a large scale combat. Works pure wonders on creatures with low will saves.

Take a look at the spell description for more details.

To make this stratigy even more fun, use lots of silent images and their higher level equivalents. Then pretend these illusions are the enemies comrades who calls for their aid from somewhere within the area covered with Hallusinatory Terrain. :schemes:

this is eather 19 or 20

create illusionary dragon to threaten a small town.
fight dragon
be worshipped as a hero by the town

This also works if the town really is threatend by a dragon, just make an illusion of him, fight off the illusion, get rewarded, skip town before the real dragon shows up :angelhide

20 or 21

if you need the help of a good cleric or paladin, mmake illusionary evil people rage through the country side, put illusionary heads on pikes etc.
admittedly he might get kind of annoyed when he/she finds out the truth about the alleged evil people.

aaarghh I keep thinking of these just as I start to do my work.

21 or 22 if your in a compitition of some kind to see who can make the most stuff, ride the best etc. make an illusion do it perfectly.

22 or 23 there is a great hero. The great hero gets sick right before the battle. you dont want the troops demoralized so make an illusion of him charge into battle and kill the enemy.

23 or 24 when attacking an enemy castle nation army etc. demoralize them with your illusionary army

24 or 25 create illusionary barbarian, use ventriloquism to make the enemies attack him not you
Tyrasius

02-24-06, 07:08 PM
25 or 26 make an illusionary illusionist do rotten things with his powers like fake haunt a house and fake exorcise it then reveal the bad "illusionist" and be thanked and rewarded
Tyrasius

02-24-06, 07:11 PM
26 or 27 create an illusionary cliff make your archers illusionary fly off the cliff and start shooting while there actually on solid ground, no one will dare leap off the cliff to attack them but it doesn't work if they have archers, though it can still be used for retreat purposes
Tyrasius

27 or 28 if you need to escape make an illusionary building, forest, etc. appear around the enemy so they think they've been teleported

Yay good idea's, I am playing an illusionist but I really don't know how to use the figments, in the type of campaign (Mainly Hack and Slash) I haven't been able to succesfully use my figments much...

29.Illusory script an explosize runes so only the intended target gets blown up. I don't know if this will owrk though.
Ikeren

02-25-06, 08:50 AM
I don't think so: It would make it so only the person the illusionary script is intended for can trigger the runes, but the blast radius would be the same and those nearby would still get hurt. However, it could prove useful; sending a message to somebody you want to kill, you don't particularily want one of his minions to read it when he isn't nearby, do ya :D?

I dont remember if this has been said yet so
30 scare off enemies with an illusionary dragon, or other freakishly dangerous creature

31. My gnome used to make illussary walls in dungeons and send illusions to get the guards attention and run into the illusionary wall room. at that point the entire party would open fire on them with bows.. and the illusion would run thru the corridor.. with a rogue on either side.. double sneak attack.

32. two words: illusionary clothes :P
Linkrulesx10

02-27-06, 04:13 AM
kharmakazy? could you please explain how ur trick works, I didn't quite get it...

33. make illusonary battering rams that slowly progress to the walls of a castle in a siege to draw enemy fire.
Kharmakazy

Ok, say a room is 30 feet by 30 feet square. You create an illusion of the wall, only your illusion is 5 feet in front of the real wall. SO now the room appears to be 30 feet by 25 feet. Your party hides behind the fake wall.

Then you lure the monsters into this room.. all they see is an empty room. Your party launches arrows at the monsters. They get confused. With a hight enough dc they won't ever figure out that the wall is fake.. Worst case scenario they run away out of confusion.. Best case, they are too riddled with holes to matter.

#34... an extension of #2: We get ambushed a lot at night by archers who encircle our camp. Pop off a silent image wall and suddenly half of them have nothing to shoot at. If shaped right you can try and drive them towards your tanks when they run around the wall trying to get a line of sight. If your party makes their will saves and the baddies don't, you are now invisible to all the baddies who can't see through the wall.

#35. Create a set of walls into a funnel shape that forces the enemy in a straight line, then have fun with either a line spell or your raging goliath barbarian using the domino rush technique.

#36. Your party rogue will love you in low level campaigns when you silent image him into a dome... if he makes his will save. Total concealment = tasty sneak attacks. Works best in small rooms where the enemy can't get more than 30 feet away. Make him a blindfold of true darkness and he won't even have to make a will save.

#37. Ghosts! Make some ghosts of your enemy's relatives, comrades, whatever, and have them try and pursuade the enemy into surrendering, "Look at what he's done to us? We've become his slaves. Turn back if you value your immortal soul."

#38. Merlin has taught us so much. Disguise self is the perfect way to get you and your friends laid (note friends must have disguise self or a disguise self hat. It is afterall called disguise self.)

#39. Mentioned before somewhere else. Minor image up an animated map of the battlefield for strategy discussions in the war room.

#40. Have a friend cast unseen servant to make your figments feel more real. You become a hero when you save the town from the maniacal mad groper. "honk honk"

#41. For those of you who've read the Arms & Equipment Guide's section on exotic mounts, you'll know about the gelatenous cube mounts. Who's going to want to touch you when you're in one of those? Plus if you run into a real gelatenous cube, you can convince people that jumping right in is painless and fun.

#42. Have fun with speech and thought bubbles! Make your friends say and think the silliest things without them knowing they're saying it. A silent casting can help you rat out your friends for their heinous crimes without them knowing it was you. "It was me, and I'd do it again if I had the chance"

#43. Go MMO. Have your name and title float above your head where ever you go. Chicks dig it.

#44. Sell ad space. Make cheap billboards to advertise your new pub. "Come to Enchanter Tim's Tavern and Inn where everything's served en flambeau"
Linkrulesx10

03-01-06, 05:51 AM
OH NO... not enchanter Tim.. WE ARE ALL DOOMED RUN AWAY FROM HIS VERY SMALL FIREBALL SPELL AHHHHHH IT SHOULD BURN BUT IT IS ONLY SPECIAL EFFECTS.

45. Create illusions of shadowy masses that float around the battle field, get them to go in front of bad guys and conceal you troops, warn your party before hance and they will gain a +4 on their will saves to disbelieve, I'm sure if u give a demostration of it before hand the DM can waize the save DC as well... Just imagine shadows start seeping up from the ground and they then go around all concealing all enemies, and since allies know its not real they can see through it.
