What do you do with prestidigitation? For the not-so-obvious spells like Cures or Fireballs, or Charms, could someone explain how to best use such spells?

I secon Ray of Frost, I mean that spell is a monster with sneak attack. (Like any "Ray"-type spell's)

Hypnotism. Damn that spell is broken.
Nyat

06-09-05, 10:40 AM
About ray of frost...eve seen Acid splash? You can sneak attack with it too, it does acid damage which is less likely to be resisted, and it doesn't allow SR. Although its not a ray, its still a ranged touch attack.

Not gunna add this to the list, but I've always loved the spell Green Blockade from Masters of the Wild - creates a 20-foot long, 2-foot wide wall of plants. Great for deflecting enemies and hiding from acid-spitting black dragons while they fight an undead warrior of sorts.

Too bad they didn't update the spell for 3.5 in any of the Completes. One of my favorites.

I'd have to agree that Acid Splash is more useful that Ray of Frost. Acid bypasses an object's hardness, so it can be used to damage virtually any object. I don't think that both Fireball and Lightning Bolt both deserve to be on the list. They're just differently shaped and typed versions of the same spell.

Personally I'd go with Fireball being more useful by default as it han hurt monsters around the corner. It may be more commonly resisted but weaknesses against it are more common also.

The most useful spells ever are the Polymorph spells, with Alter Self being the baseline. You can get Natural Armor, Natural attacks, Movement Modes, and use it to make Disguises. Polymorph adds the ability to get extra powers and resistances, Shapechange does more-so, but Alter Self is probably #1 on my list of most useful spells if we take level into account.

As a sorcerer, I'm frankly quite offended nobody has suggested the Shadow Evocation and Conjuration spells. What's that, access to entire spell schools? I'll take two, and a side order of fries.
smrtgmp

06-09-05, 11:40 PM
Yeah, the shapechanging spells definately need to make the list. Their versitility is staggering.

Finally someone else agrees with me. To those of you that mention Ray of Frost, you do realize that Acid Splash exists right? Its right there in the PHB and its an all around better spell than Ray of Frost. THe only disadvantage it has is that it wont be pumped up by weapon focus (ray) and weapon specialization (ray). But those are bad feats anyways.

solid fog
d-door
glitterdust
greater mage armor
evard's black tenticles

just some more random spells that prove useful.
conjuration is my favorite school.
Lilt

06-10-05, 07:58 AM
Ah yes, Evan's Spiked Tentacles of Forced Intrusion (http://www.giantitp.com/cgi-bin/GiantITP/ootscript?SK=20). Definately a good spell.

Some more I can't believe aren't here yet:
Antimagic Field
If you have access to it then the BBEG mage is dead as they can't DDoor out and can't run because they're grappled/similar.

Doomtide (Complete Divine)
Not perfect for large party play, but it practically garuantees victory against what could be otherwise insurmountable odds. At-least it does until people get true-seeing or memorise wind-causing spells.

Dimensional Anchor
Used in binding spells, Keeps someone from Blinking (or improved blinking), Stops the BBEG from DDooring.

Enervation
Never underestimate the power of negative levels.

Minor Creation and Major Creation deserve a mention. Their power is limited only by your imagination (especially if you have Eschew Materials).

Lost all your equipment? Need a ladder? A barricade? A boat? A weapon? A net?

Come on, you can't tell me a 1st level sorcerer knocking out 4 2nd level fighters isn't awesome. At the very least, he'll get a running start.

my :twocents: :

- Wall of fire (specially if you can change where it´s placed, like ´along the corridor´)
- Create water and a researshed version of createwater ( yep, i have a flooder ´hydromancer´.. "all is good with water" )
- Rusting grasp (aww, c´mon, never had the joy to make a warrior´s platemail go kapoof?? or deseveably be smited by a female paladin for it?)
- Produce Flame :mage: (better with ´web´ or ´grease´. or anything flamable)
- Sonic spells (balls, cones... sonic imuniy is quite rare, fire is more common)
- Shatter ( :D )
- Phantasmal terrain (and the greater variant)

And for the Epic bit:
- HellBall ( :evillaugh :mage: *BOOM* :evillaugh )
- Nailed to the sky
