I've been considering this for awhile and thought I'd start a thread for it in case anyone else was interested in this category of spells. What I'm looking for are spells that serve a useful function but either were excluded or were cut in the books due to their lack of combat potential.

These can be original or spells from the game and can be a fully detailed outlining of a spell or just an idea of something you think would come in handy for day to day living. Likewise they can be from any time period knowledge wise all I ask is before each contribution you include a number and keep it reasonably sensible. That said here's 5 to start off with, 2 from the books in rough idea format, 1 that I vaugely recall someone else posting and 2 of my own.

1) Glasssteel: This spell gives glass the hardness of steel, in game terms replace glass's hardness, hitpoints and break DC with that of an equivilent size piece of steel.

2) Repel Vermin: This spell creates a hemispherical shield that replies vermin and prevents them entering the area. Any insect/s caught inside the shield imediately make every effort to leave it by the shortest route. Once outside the shield if an insect is put into a situation where it is unable to move away as the shield moves over it then the spell disipates.

3) Umbrella: This spell creates a shield around the caster which blocks all incoming moisture large enough to condense into droplets. Typically used to keep dry in rainstorms.

4)
Name: Sunscreen
School: Abjuration
Level: Cleric 0, Sor/Wiz 0
Components: V, S
Casting Time: 1 standard action
Range: Touch
Target: Creature touched.
Duration: 10 minutes per level.
Effect: Protects from harmful UV radiation.
Saving Throw: No
Spell Resistance: No

This spell creates an invisible shield around the creature touched that automatically adjusts to tone Ultra violet radiation down to a non harmful level protecting the subject from the potential hazards of operating outside in daylight ranging from simple sunburn to life threatening cancers. Originally developed as a prototype of of a more powerful spell to protect vampires from the lethal effects of sunlight this version somehow found its way in wider knowledge. This version does not provide protection against supernatural vulnerability to daylight such as that possesed by a vampire. wizards believe this to be because of the relative intensity experienced by such creatures implying the spell does have a range outside of which it can't offer protection.

Post Note: Volunteers to stand in a lethal dose of ultraviolet radiation are saught to test this theory.

5)
Name: Note taker.
School: Conjuration
Level: Sor/Wiz 0
Components: V, S
Casting Time: 1 standard action
Range: Short (couldn't find out what that actually was)
Target: A recording device.
Duration: 10 minutes per level.
Effect: Causes the device to take the notes you would.
Saving Throw: No
Spell Resistance: No

This spell causes a recording device ranging from a simple piece of pen and paper up to state of the art holographic recording equipment to take notes on the situation your witnessing be it a simple lecture, personal monolouge or a violent battle as you would yourself including points of interest, expanded explanations of difficult concepts and personal commentary where approapriate without the need for any further involvement allowing the caster to focus their attention on what they are observing instead.

It is important to note this spells bases itself off the casters note taking ability and will neither (a) make a record of something the caster doesn't know or learn in the course of the spells duration or (b) take better notes than the caster would themself with the sole exception that the recording device will not lose itself in the subject matter and forget to take notes.

Insect Sheild

Rename it to "repel vermin". Acts a bit like an Antipathy spell that affects any creature of type Vermin.

The Eberron setting is filled with people who use magic (especially low level magic) for practical means, one of my favorite ones is using gentle repose for preserving foodstuffs.

Also, repel vermin (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/spells/repelVermin.htm) stats.

Hmmmm that's different from the one I was thinking of, I'll have to go over my Eberron book and post some of the idea in it. Meanwhile I'm hoping for some of the same creativity in the silly spells thread. Which I intend to encourage by posting 5 spells or spell ideas a day till I run out of material.
