First of all, hello to you all! :)
I'm from Italy and i play D&D for 15 years! :D

I'd searched all this section to find the "arcane". 25 pages here and there, but nothing.
I write here the question and I'll use Ray of Enfeeblement as an example.

That Ray spell, how much damage will do? The phb say "1d6 + 1 per 2 caster level". Ok. If I'm a 7th level wizard, my Ray do 1d6 +3 or 1d6 +4? What is the exact progression?
As a DM i think strongly that a 7th lvl wizard will do 1d6 +3 (7/2 truncated = 3), but my players are not so certain... :(

Help me understad! :P

The general rule is that fractions round down. So in your example of "+1 per 2 caster levels" you have a caster level of 7. 7/2 is 3.5, rounded down=3. You would only get +4 when you reach 8th level.

My first post, so hello all! :)

I'm a player in party running adventure with master Devrom and also i'm the guy who seek the truth in spellcasting. :)

I know the existence of the golden rule of "rounding down", and obviously, i apply this method in every mathematical situation. But if i read the description of magic damage (or magic healing...) some doubts remain.

This is the level progression of various spell appling the formula 1dX+Y every Z level IMHO.

Level 1
Ray of Enfeeblement 1d6 + 1
Cure light Wounds 1d8 + 1
Magic missile 1d4 + 1

Level 2
Ray of Enfeeblement 1d6 + 1
Cure light Wounds 1d8 + 2
Magic missile 1d4 + 1

Level 3
Ray of Enfeeblement 1d6 + 2
Cure light Wounds 1d8 + 3
Magic missile 1d4 + 1 + 1d4 + 1

Level 4
Ray of Enfeeblement 1d6 + 2
Cure light Wounds 1d8 + 4
Magic missile 1d4 + 1 + 1d4 + 1

and so on...

In other word, for me, every spell in form 1dX + Y every Z level start at level 1 with a +1 (at minimum), considering the Z like a upper limit.

Thank to all who can help a bunch of cleric and mage against the rules of magic :)

I think where you are going wrong is that Magic Missile is a different format to the other 2 spells. MM gives one extra missile for every 2 levels above first. It therefore has a different progression to the others which have a progression of 1 or 2 per caster level.

Right. One extra missile every 2 level above first.

It's explicitely written because, in my hopinion, the standard rule (in format 1dX + Y every Z level) is:

+Y on level 1 --> Z
+2Y on level Z+1 --> 2Z
+3Y on level 2Z+1 --> 3Z

and so on...

Excuse for this mathematical computation of magic... :)

Excuse for this mathematical computation of magic... :) I'm not sure what it is that you are saying here. I think your previous example of spells at each caster level was correct though, except that unless the description for RoE says "minimum of +1" then the damage for caster level 1 is just 1d6 (1 divided by 2 = 0.5, round down to 0) and the damage at caster level 3 is 1d6+1, not 1d6+2 (3 divided by 2 = 1.5, round down to 1).

and at 1st, it deals 1d6+0
