There are no 1st level spells with the cold descriptor. I was going to play an Ice scorcerer but without a 1st level it will be hard to do that for flavor. (Yes I know somone will say Ray of Frost as a 0 level)

Lesser orb of cold from the SpC, for one. There's a couple more, too, I think. Too lazy to go check.

Only one I can think of: Ice Dagger; Spell Compendium; Page 118

Or you could just make a custom spell by changing Burning Hand's energy to cold.

Oh yeah. I forgot, there's also loads of Energy Substitution potential, though I admit that's less than preferable for a Sorceror (unless you're using the PHBII faster metamagic variant).

As a flavor i have always added some description to what my spell casters particular magic missl looked like (i have a fatespinner that throws out cards ala Gambit)... wtihout changeing the spell just say the Magic missle looks like balls of rocky road

if you do not have access to the spell compendium I would suggest simply asking the DM if you can have a spell that is identicle to burning hands except it deals cold damage.

I wasn't refering to using Energy Substitution, though that's a good idea as well. I was instead suggesting researching a cold varient of Burning Hands. Call it Freezing hands, make it work just like Burning Hands except that it deals cold instead of fire damage, then run it by the DM.

Get Frostburn. If you're going for ice spells, that thing is loaded with 'em.

Change Grease to 'Ice'. The effects remain the same :)

Your Obscuring Mist feels cold (it doesn't deal damage, though).

Lesser Orb of Cold is also from Complete Arcane I think.

DDO has this 1st lv ice bolt spell or something.
Not official dnd material, but could be worth looking into.

Ah, niac's cold ray.

Ah, niac's cold ray.

...and that, with no SR, is a 1st level spell? *shudder*

The spell did cause a stir for a while, most notably due to its high damage dice for a 1st lv spell. Supposedly, it was balanced by "reflex negates", rather than the usual "reflex negates half". However, monsters in DDO tend to have inflated stats. So I am not sure how powerful this spell would be in pnp.

Sr would still apply. You could add a ranged touch requirement on top of it. High damage to compensate for low odds of hitting.:)

nuh-uh. In pnp, d4/d6 seems to be standard for level 1 spells (barring orbs) and conjuration zaps=no SR

As someone already mention, Frosburn would be the source to check for spell with the cold descriptor. You can also find ton of feat to complement your concept of ice sorcerer and the frostmage prestige class who doesn't slow your spellcasting at all while giving you some benefit like natural armor and more spell known. Imo, it's a pretty good prestige class for a sorcerer who want to specialize in ice magic.

Niac's is (essentially) a cold-based magic version of Mind Thrust.

I think it's originally from an FR book.
