| Alderon04-07-06, 10:40 PM | OK, my 1st-lvl wizard begins play with all 0-lvl spells, plus 3 1st-lvl spells plus 1 extra 1st-lvl spell for having an INT score of 15, but also one 2nd-lvl spell for having an INT score of 15, but 1st-lvl wizards can't cast 2nd-lvl spells, so could I substitute this 2nd-lvl spell for a 1st-lvl spell instead? thnx. |
| Alderon04-07-06, 10:48 PM | Also, by bonus spells (table 1-1) means that I would start play w/ a spell book containing an extra x many bonus spells depending on INT score and have x many extra bonus spells to prepare per day? |
| meatrace04-08-06, 01:59 AM | no worries, you only start with 1 extra 1st level spell per int bonus, so you never got that 2nd level spell to begin with, just another 1st level. is this point buy? cuz wizard ONLY needs one good attribute, int. if your best score is 15 that's not fantastic. but playing sub-par characters can be LOTS of fun IMHO. for spells I'd go with grease and color spray. whatever else you take, get those :) oh, and bonus spells by int, as per the table in the beginning of the book, are only #spells/day, not spells known/in spellbook. sorry. |

You dont gain the benefits from your 2nd level bonus spells untill become capable of casting 2nd level spells (and even then it wont net you any spells known). |
| EternalZzyx04-08-06, 07:59 AM | No. You'll get 4 1st level spells for free. You don't gain the benefits from your 2nd level bonus spells until become capable of casting 2nd level spells (and even then it wont net you any spells known). with an INT of 15 you have 5 1st spells in your spell book at level one, 3 from being a wizard, 2 from having an INT mod of +2 (15-11=4, 4/2=2), and each day you get bonus spell slots from having a high INT. and can memorize 2 spells per day. you don't use table 1-1 to work out bonus spells known, you just get your INT mod in bonuses at 1st level, 1-1 is for slots only. if this is as clear as mud perhaps sitting down with your DM is in order. |
| smrtgmp04-08-06, 01:42 PM | with an INT of 15 you have 5 1st spells in your spell book at level one, 3 from being a wizard, 2 from having an INT mod of +2 (15-11=4, 4/2=2), and each day you get bonus spell slots from having a high INT. and can memorize 2 spells per day.Heh. I meant 5. Not sure how I botched that, especially with all the wizards I play. My apologies to the OP for the misinformation. |
| Witch04-08-06, 01:50 PM | I'll just summarize it for the OP, because if you don't know the rules, I think this could be a bit confusing. - You get all 0th-level spells in your spellbook from the Players Handbook. - You get 3 1st-level spells in your spellbook ánd a number of 1st-level spells in your spellbook equal to your intelligence bonus. If your intelligence is 15, your intelligence bonus is 2. Hence in total you get 5 level 1 spells in your spellbook. - The table for Bonus Spells is not for spells known, it is for how many slots you can prepare each day. |
| Alderon04-08-06, 02:52 PM | so if "the table for Bonus Spells is not for spells known, it is for how many slots you can prepare each day" therefore (Table 3-18 in the Player's Handbook), I can prepare 3 0-lvl spells, 1 1st-lvl spells, plus an extra 1st-lvl spell (table 1-1) for an INT score of 15, plus an extra 2nd-lvl spell (table 1-1) for an INT score of 15, but since 1st lvl wizards cannot cast 2nd lvl spells I cannot substitute this for a 1st lvl spell. Therefore, I can prepare a total 3 0-lvl spells and 2 1st-lvl spells per day? |
| Artector04-08-06, 04:08 PM | Yes you have that right. You will have all cantrips (O lvls) in your spellbook, along with 5 first level spells. Good luck! PS When you reach third level you will be able to cast 2cd level spells. At that point that bonus 2cd level slot for high int will kick in and you will be able to benefit from it. |
| Alderon04-08-06, 07:37 PM | kool! thanx everyone for your help! |
