Can anyone explain why Gloves of Dexterity give a +2 enhancement bonus to Dex and an ioun stone gives +2 enhancement onus to dex but the ioun stone costs twice as much? Just curious. seems to make ious stones bunk to buy. Nice if you find them though.

Because if you're wearing gloves of dexterity, you lose your glove slot, and you can't wear, say, gauntlets of ogre power. If you're using an ioun stone, on the other hand, you can still wear magical gloves that give you some other benefit.

because they do not take up an item slot... for example if you are wearing gloves of dexterity +2 you can not also wear gauntlest of ogre power, however if you are wearing the iuon stone that adds +2 to Dex you can wear the gauntlest of ogre power (or any other magical glves that do not add an enhancement bonus to your dexterity) and still get the effects...

Ioun Stones are unslotted, you can have an infinite number of unslotted items.

Slotted items are more precious than unslotted, because you only have so many slots. Unslotted are much more powerful, because you can have as many as you want.

Hence, unslotted items cost twice as much as slotted.

and bit rule background also...SRD: MagicItemsI
Special : Base Price Adjustment : Example
No space limitation4 : Multiply entire cost by 2 : Ioun stone

Thanks, I hadn't thought about that but it makes sense.

In case nobody has mentioned it...

Gloves are slotted.
Ioun stones are unslotted.

You guys are ridiculous. It's clearly because an ioun stone doesn't take up a slot.

Unslotted items like Ioun stones cost twice as much.

:uh-huh: I don't see why what all the confusion's about. It's very simple. If a magic item doesn't take up an item slot, its price is multiplied by 2. The classic example of this is ioun stones, but things like tattoos also qualify. I hope this helps.

Actually its because of inflation. Back in the day Ioun stones and Gloves of dex used to cost the same amount, but a TON of nobles started to buy up Ioun stones because they looked so shiny, and you know those royal types, I.Q.'s down the drain and all, so the shiny factor had a HUGE part in this story. Anyway, so the Stones value began to increase, which caused an uprising with the Gnomes whom had a patent on the Gloves of Dex, which they called the "Hands of Niftyness for Large Folk In General" but thats a longer story behind the name and i shant go into it here. Well the Gnomish uprising caused a severe shortage of the Gloves as well as the buying of the Ioun Stones and both of their stocks plummeted, which caused a major problem in the Dwarven villiage of Geodeoeshshmeanr. The Dwarves then decided to start a black marken on both items to save their villiage from total desolation, and thats how organized crime began in the world. Anyway so the Gnomes got angrier still, and the nobles started at their shinies, and the Ioun stones price went up. Hope that explains it all :D

To the best of my knowledge, Terry Pratchett is the original author of that remark, just in case you didn't know.

You know, normally when I see a question's been answered correctly three times over and nobody's disputing it, I'll leave it alone.

...and to that I hold.

Isn't it a funny word, though?

"Ioun stones!"
"I bet you do."

"I bet you do." Yeah, sounds like something medical... "Had to go to a doctor to get an ioun stone removed. And I'll have to go back in a week to check up on my phylactery."

Has anyone seen the picture of Larloch in the Lords of Darkness FR supplement? He has something like a dozen ioun stones circling above his head.
Jaerom Darkwind

Yes, Larloch has enough ioun stones to rival the Iridium constellation. They invented like 20 new types just for him. Yiou read through his equipment and say "that doesn't even exist!"

...His empty eye sockets glow with pinpoints of red light, and over two dozen ioun stones drift around his head...

So could I use the sundering cleave tactic of the combat brute feat, could I smash an ioun stone and then whack them?

No no, you got it wrong, Edy.
