| elven warriorXX02-24-06, 11:44 AM | Here are some spells I have been Tooling with. I think the 2nd one shoul be about 3rd level or so but I would like feedback :) Ray of force Evocation [Force] Level: Sor/wiz 2 Components: V, S Casting Time: 1 standard action Range: Close Effect: ray Duration: Instant Saving Throw: see text Spell Resistance: yes You must make a Ranged touch to hit. If you do you deal 1d6/2 caster levels (5d6 max) damage to the target. They must make a Fort save or be knocked prone. Earth defence Conjuration [Earth] Level: Sor/wiz 4 Components: V, S, M Casting Time: Immediate Range: close Duration: 1 round Saving Throw: None Spell Resistance: no You summon a wall of earth 5ft long, 5ft wide, and 6ft tall. It gives full cover for medium creatures, half for large creatures, and only ¼ for huge creatures. It can block a spell or a attack and can take 40 damage. A spell that hits the wall effects the wall but not the space behind it. All other spaces around the wall can be effected. Magic missile can go around the wall. You can only cast this spell if there is earth were you want to create the wall. Arcane material component: A handfull of earth. |
| tarkin02-24-06, 11:54 AM | Earth Defense should give full COVER, not concealement. |
| Chrono Nexus02-24-06, 12:58 PM | Having full cover against a creature also gives you full concealment against it (something is blocking its view of you), but it should say cover anway. Otherwise, nice. You make nice spells. I think the earth wall would be 2nd level, if not for the casting time. With the casting time, you are looking at Maybe a 4th level spell. I would probably change it to a standard action, but it is your call. |
| Auorix02-24-06, 01:06 PM | What if the wall isnt a legal target of the spell being cast? In the case of a spell being cast on you, I know you can make the spellcraft check to see what spell your enemy is casting but not which target he is casting it on.... sometimes this is a non issue... ie your the only person down a certain hallway... but when your bunched around your allies... it becomes more difficult to determine if that ray of doom spell is comming for you or your buddy standing next to you. Does the immediate action just become a guess at that point? What about spells that strike unerringly such as magic missile? What if the damage exceeds the capacity the wall can absorb... will the remainder punch through? Is that orc standing in front of you bull rushed back a square when you use this spell to block the incomming ray of the caster behind him? Or is he... in the block of earth? I would like to see some higher lvl swift actions... think the highest I have seen has been like 4th. |
| elven warriorXX02-24-06, 04:28 PM | Thanks for your comments. Okay 4th level it is. You can also make a Spellcraft check to see who the spell is aiming at (like you can see the caster looking at the target or point at him and the like). This is not RAW. Maybe it should be a spot check. Also The wall takes 1 spell. If the damage is higher then 40 then the number that is over 40 the one being protected by the wall takes. (if it was a 3rd level spell it would be 30). If Ristha makes a spellcraft/spot to see that a evil drow sorcerer is going to cast a fireball spell at Gurdo the fighter. She then casts Earth defence and a wall shots up to stop the spell. The 26 damage goes around the wall (not 1 space right behind the wall though) and Gurdo takes no damage, But Vrynak the Rogue who is right next to Gurdo does take damage. The wall then falls to the ground. |
| Chrono Nexus02-24-06, 10:40 PM | Sorry, but that seems a little too good, it being able to negate damage first. It would block a fireball, and it would take damage, but it might not negate the fireball damage. What I mean is that normally if something that is blocking a creature from a spread is destroyed by the spread, the creature would take the effects of that spell normally. The fact that a character has full cover against a spread already gives her a +4 bonus to reflex and improved evasion (look in the players handbook or DMG for more details) makes this spell already an effective barrier. To integrate these already existing rules into the spell, take a look at dungeon terrain and give the wall a set hardness and hp. This spell sounds fantastic, but I would consider revising it. I know Tran. already has enough spells, but since this spell manipulates already existing terrain I think it is from that school. I intend to make a bootleg version of this spell, and I will post it unless you have objections. |

Sure you can revise it. Yes Trans, Evoc, Conj, and Necro as ALOT of spells, Illusion and Enchantment need more spells, Abjur and Divin are fine as is. Thanks for the help :) |
| smrtgmp02-24-06, 11:28 PM | Wings of cover is a 2nd level spell that grants full cover as an immediate action. Granted, the duration is instantaneous, so it wont help you against more than one attack per round. |
| elven warriorXX02-25-06, 10:21 AM | I am Also thinking of making it last 1 round/4 or 3 caster levels. |
| Chrono Nexus02-25-06, 06:44 PM | Here is my version of the spell. I had to look up cover rules, and I had to fill in a few holes in them, but here it is. ;) Earthen Defense Transmutation Level: Dr 2, Sor/Wiz 2 Components: V, S, M Casting Time: 1 standard action Range: 5 ft. Duration: Instantaneous Saving Throw: None Spell Resistance: No You morph and alter the surrounding dirt, sand and mud to create a wall of earth 3ft thick, 5ft wide, and 6ft tall. It grants full cover for medium or smaller creatures, half cover for large creatures, and one quarter cover for huge creatures. The wall of earth has an ac of 10, a hardness of 2 and 180 hit points. The wall grants you full cover (no attacks can hit, improved evasion and a +6 to reflex saves) and blocks line of effect against attacks and spells originating from the opposite side of the wall. It grants you half cover (+4 cover bonus to armor class, and a +4 bonus to reflex saves) against all creatures on the other side of the wall. If a creature is closer than you to the earthen wall, you do not gain any benefits of the cover provided by the wall against that creature. If you are more than 30 feet from the wall, you do not gain any of the benefits that the wall imparts. When the hit point total of the wall reaches 0, the wall crumbles and the space it occupied becomes difficult terrain (1/2 speed). Dirt, mud or sand must be present as a part of the terrain that the wall will occupy, or else your casting of Earthen Defense fails and you lose the spell. Material component: A hand-full of earth. My Comments: This spell is a very good defense in long-range combat, but in closer quarters it is easy to move to a different side to negate the bonuses. It is also stationary, and unlike most walls cannot be shaped to accomodate an arrowslit or to surround or capture anything. It can be good for sealing tunnels (Earthen Defense + Soften Earth and Stone). |
| elven warriorXX02-26-06, 10:57 AM | Whoa...very good  It clears up a lot. Thanks Chrono :) I also think there should be a Immediate version of the spell at 4th/5th level. It will go along with my Immediate Wind wall spell to stop arrow fire. |
