| calypso11-11-04, 10:30 PM | Hey guys, lemme know what you think. Quintin's Borrowed Power Necromancy Level: Sor/Wiz 7 Components: V,S,XP Casting Time: 1 standard action Range: Close (25 ft. + 5 ft./2 levels) Target: One creature Duration: 1 round/level Saving Throw: Will negates Spell Resistance: Yes You sap the power from the target, draining them of all spellcasting ability and spell-like abilities. For the duration of the spell, you have access to their spells and spell-like abilities. The spells and spell-like abilities are treated as if they were cast by the target (for DC and caster level), but the caster must still expend the necessary components. The casting of spells and use of spell-like abilities counts against the targets total for the day. When this spells duration ends, the affected creature regains access to their spells and spell-like abilities, but do not regain those that were used. XP Cost: 500 xp Quintin's Paper Tiger Enchantment [Mind-affecting] Level: Sor/Wiz 2 Components: V,S Casting Time: 1 standard action Range: Close (25 ft. + 5 ft./2 levels) Target: One creature Duration: 1 round/level Saving Throw: Will negates Spell Resistance: Yes This spell causes no outward effect, but makes the target hesitant and ineffectual in combat. For the duration of the spell, the target takes a -1/2 levels penalty (up to -5 at 10th level) to attack and damage rolls. In addition, any damage that the target deals is subdual. The target is unaware of the change, however. EDIT: Changes in bold. |

The only thing that concerns me is what would be an effective defense against it, besides a high Will save. I think the second one might be a bit too powerful for a second level spell, but I'm not sure. Bestow Curse can only give a -4 penalty to attacks, etc, or a -6 to one ability score and it's 3rd level. Of course, it's also permanent until removed, but that doesn't make much difference in it's effectiveness in a combat. A -10 penalty to attack and damage is the equivalent to a -20 penalty to Strength. I'd either make this a 3rd level spell, or cap the penalty at -5. Edit: Hmm... Ray of Exhaustion is 3rd level, and it effectively imposes a -6 penalty to both Str and Dex, as well as other effects and lasts for a while. Ray of Enfeeblement applies a Str penalty of 1d6+5 (max) with no save, and it's first level. So maybe your spell is ok at 2nd level. It's borderline I think. |
| calypso11-11-04, 10:51 PM | Well, I'm not sure what a good defense against Borrowed Power would be.... use your spells and spell-like abilities really fast? :D Seriously though... I mean, spell resistance... high will saves. It targets spellcasters primarily, who have good will saves. Is the XP cost too high though? Limited wish is 300. For Paper Tiger... well, my thought was, it starts out weaker than its peers, but scales better. So, at 3rd level, it only gives them a -1 to attack and damage. At 8 its -4, so it becomes equivalent to bestow curse. Though, I suppose low level spells shouldn't scale so well, so maybe cap it at -5 like you said. Thanks for the input! Calypso |

If you are worried about defenses, you could always make it targeted (short range), which would make it susceptible to spell turning. IMO Paper Tige is a bit too powerful for a 2nd level spell. Even if it capped at -5 at 10th level, it would still be a great 2nd level spell. If you did cap it at -5, you could probably increase the range to medium. :twocents: |
