Personally, wish for the one thing that cannot be easily taken from you or lost. Two wishes in quick succession can grant you a +2 inherent bonus to an ability score. A +1 increase in a modifier may not seem like much but it will always be there for you.

I agree, I'd go for the ability score, or enchant a weapon.

A wish can produce any one of the following effects.

Create a magic item, or add to the powers of an existing magic item.
Grant a creature a +1 inherent bonus to an ability score. Two to five wish spells cast in immediate succession can grant a creature a +2 to +5 inherent bonus to an ability score (two wishes for a +2 inherent bonus, three for a +3 inherent bonus, and so on). Inherent bonuses are instantaneous, so they cannot be dispelled. Note: An inherent bonus may not exceed +5 for a single ability score, and inherent bonuses to a particular ability score do not stack, so only the best one applies.

Using to duplicate any 8th level spell could be useful in a pinch too...

Use one to create your dream magic item, and pay the additional XP for it.
Save the other for a life or death situation.

If the Wishes are granted and must be used immediately, then use one Wish to get a Ring of Three Wishes (paying/contributing the additional XP cost yourself) so that you can make your Wish decisions at a later date or save them for when you truly need them.

This scenario is going on in my campaign at the moment. So here are some things that the players are considering. Some I have yet to rule on and feedback would be appreciated. (There was a similar thread on the Epic board a while ago)

Wish for a feat to be permanently added to your list. You may have to pay more EXP depending on what the feat is. (Though we have ruled that you cannot get a class ability, e.g. wild shape, with a wish)

Wish for a spell like ability (SLA). Currently we are considering lvl 0-3 spells 3xday - lvl 4-6 2xday - lvl 7-9 1xday. The popular choice is teleport - always nice to have around. You would have to pay all extra costs of the SLA each time it was utilized.

Wish to rework your levels. If you took a wrong turn during character design in your career then wish yourself into the state that you would prefer.

If these wishes came to you from some outside source then it is possible that you could wish to have the 5000 EXP for yourself. Depending on the DM you will have to be careful how you phrase it in game.

Any others?

EDIT - just saw that there is a thread on this already - link (http://www.wizards.com/leaving.asp?url=http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?t=495367&origin=)

Believe me, you don't want people with 1/day 9th level spells wandering around.

Considering the power of a wish spell, I'd put the limits as follows:

I would suggest a cantrip or 1st level spell at will (BUT NO HEALING!), a 2nd level spell 3/day, a 3rd level spell 2/day, or a 4th level spell 1/day. Caster level = HD, saves are charisma based.

Actually, I'm uncomfortable with the 1/day level... I'd probably limit you to a 0 or 1st level at will, or a 2nd level 3/day.

For two wishes used together, you can make a 2nd level spell at-will (still no healing allowed), or get a 3rd level at 3/day.

For five wishes together, you could probably get a 5th or below at will, or a 6th level spell 3/day. I think that's probably fair.

I should have stated that it is a high level (epic) campaign so the characters already have some from Archmage etc. So it is not unbalancing for them. You are correct that in a low level campaign it should be restricted. I would keep it not more than 1 level above what the character can currently cast with the aformentioned guidelines.

How many wishes would you need to get wild shape?

...use one Wish to get a Ring of Three Wishes...I second this notion. I'd love to wish for more wishes.
