| sandskimmer11-06-05, 04:46 PM | These spells were always good to have in 2ed and I was wondering if any of these have made appearances in 3.0/3.5. If so, please list the books each are listed in. Thanks. Conjure Spell Component Copy Lasting Breath Chromatic Orb Ice Knife Iron Mind |
| smrtgmp11-06-05, 05:23 PM | I believe Ice Knife is in the Complete Arcane. I've seen various conversions of chomatic orb here and there, but I dont think you're going to find an official version that recreates the original, as I dont see them putting out a 1st level save or die. I miss conjure spell component. |
| Mysticaloctopus11-06-05, 05:31 PM | Isn't conjure spell component replaced by owning a component pouch? I've never seen the original, does it create/summon an expensive component by tossing GP into the air or what? |

I've never seen the original, does it create/summon an expensive component by tossing GP into the air or what? Actually, upon reviewing the original spell from Tome & Magic, it seems completely useless and stupid. Yes, a spell component pouch will replace this spell exceptionally well. The spell would teleport material components of 1gp or less to the caster, up to 3 components per level of the caster. They must be naturally occuring and must be within range of the spell (1 mile/level). Attempting to conjure animal parts has unpredicted results which may cause the caster to teleport to the animal! How does a 1st level spell allow for teleportation of any type, BTW? Chromatic Orb just kicked all kinds of butt though. <sigh> |
| cwslyclgh11-06-05, 05:50 PM | Chromatic Orb just kicked all kinds of butt though. indeed to many butts for a balanced first level spell ;) the best compromise that I have seen was that somebody posted versions of chromatic orb on the board at 3 different levels (I think it was like lesser chromatic orb, chromatic orb, and greater chromatic orb or something similar, and divided the effects up among the 3 spells... I think they were level 1,3&5 or something like it... sorry my memory is fuzzy, it was quite some time ago). |
| He Who Lurks11-06-05, 07:07 PM | I always thought it was a shame that there/not there wasn't officially converted. That spell was so much fun to play with. |
| sandskimmer11-06-05, 07:08 PM | Too much like blink I would say, though I don't recall the exact write up. |
| Xanthia11-06-05, 07:41 PM | Chromatic Orb just kicked all kinds of butt though. <sigh>Yeah; it got really cool with the save or die at 12th level, and I was wondering about it's 3rd ed stats. It's just a spell that scales with level, just like Magic Missle; I don't see the problem.... |
| Jaid11-06-05, 08:19 PM | well, for one thing, the versions of chromatic orb i am familiar with actually got to a point where it wasn't a "save or be screwed", it was "save and you're still screwed". as a first level spell, that's too much. heck, as pretty much any level spell, that's too much, IMO. when you are stunned for several rounds on a successfull save, you have a problem. furthermore, as a first level spell, you can put it into scrolls, for example. which means, a level 1 wizard can buy a scroll at CL 12 costing 300 gp, and have a death spell, with no chance of failing when casting the spell iirc. compare to having it as a 4th level spell (which is the lowest "death effect" i know of, and allows 2 different saves), and you have a minimum of 4*7*25 = 700 gp, and that allows 2 saves. |

As I recall the fully powered up spell either killed you if you failed your save or paralyzed you if you made it. A model of game balance if I ever saw one. |
