Here are three new spells for teleporting small items (or small creatures). These are basically the same spell, just of different power levels.

Feedback is always welcome.

Lesser Translocation
Conjuration (Teleportation)
Level: Sor/Wiz 1
Components: V, S
Casting Time: 1 action
Range: 10 ft.
Target: One object or creature, up to 1 pound per level
Duration: Instantaneous
Saving Throw: Will negates
Spell Resistance: Yes

When this spell is used, the caster instantly teleports a single creature or object, weighing no more than 1 pound per caster level, from anywhere within range to anywhere else within range. The subject of the teleportion cannot appear within a solid object or creature, instead appearing in the closest space it will fit in.

If the subject of the spell is a creature, it can resist this spell with a successful Will save.

If the subject of the spell is an object, it gets a saving throw only if it is currently held, carried, or worn by a creature. If the save is successful, the object is not moved and the spell fails.

Unless the caster knows the exact location and appearance of an object to be moved with this spell, he must have a line of sight to the desired subject (ie, the caster could teleport a specific potion from his own backpack into his hand, but could not use this spell to retrieve a random gold coin from someone else's coin purse). A line of effect is not required, so transparent barriers such as glass or a wall of force can be bypassed with this spell.

This spell can be used to move an item that contains other items, along with the subject's contents, so long as the container and all of its contents do not surpass the weight limit of this spell. A full backpack, bag of holding, or portable hole could thus be impossible to move with this spell.

Translocation
Level: Sor/Wiz 3
Range: Close (25 ft. + 5 ft./2 levels)
Target: One object or creature, up to 5 pounds per level

As lesser translocation, except where noted.

Greater Translocation
Level: Sor/Wiz 5
Range: Medium (100 ft. + 10 ft./level)
Target: One object or creature, up to 10 pounds per level

As lesser translocation, except where noted.

This spell can be used to take an object from an unwilling person, hence the saving throw.

I've never actually designated a spell as offensive or not. Is this a 3.5 thing? I generally just have a caster use it however he or she can think up, if it's reasonable.

No, there's no such thing as an offensive designation for spells. Some spells only affect willing targets, making them strictly non-offensive, but I don't know what Kirstar is talking about.

I think the spells look fine, on first review.

Lesser Translocation starts off worse than Mage Hand (20' maximum movement, 1 lb, compared to 30'/rd movement, 5 lbs), but can move magical items. Even without a level cap, the ability to move 20 pounds from one side of a moderate room to the other is not a big deal. I like it.

Translocation starts with a 70' movement ability (35' to either side of you), and a capacity of 25' lbs. At 20th, though, it has 150' movement of 100 lbs. Not broken, I think.... a 3rd level spell to move a single Small creature 75' into the air is fine, if not underpowered for a 20th level caster. So, it's offensive use doesn't break the spell. Good utility spell.

Greater Translocation starts with 380' range, and 90# capacity, and gets up to 600' range with 200# capacity. Now you can start throwing rogues and enemy mages into the air.... and is comparable to telekinesis. Seems fine.

I like them.

Thelon: Where are you getting your range figures for greater translocation? It would start off with a range of 190 feet, and cap out at 300 (assuming non-epic play). Also, given that its will negates, it would be tough to hit enemy spell caster with this. Other than that, I agree with your assesment of the spells.

:)

edit never mind. I just realised you were using the range as the radius of a sphere. Ignore my above paragraph (except the part about the will save).

Thanks for the feedback on these spells.

For additional ideas on how to best make use of these spells, here are a few scenarios. Enjoy!

1. You know that the 20 pound gold statue sitting on that pedestal is extremely valuable, and you are a type that would prefer it to be in your hands instead of someone else's. You also know that if the statue is moved, a cage will drop down and trap you there. Just cast translocation to teleport it directly into your hands while avoiding the trap.

2. Your allies are fighting a massively built fighter with an obviously magical flaming shocking frost greatsword. You could help out the warriors in your party by using translocation to take that fighter's sword and put it in the open hands of one of your own warriors.

3. Your poor toad familiar is trapped inside a cage hanging near the ceiling. Just use your trusty lesser translocation to put that familiar in your pocket where he'll be nice and safe.

4. You are being held in a jail cell. The sleeping guard has the key hanging off his belt, but he's 20 feet away. Just use lesser translocation to teleport that key into your hand.

5. The evil wizard, who is sort of safe behind his wall of force, is casting a nice long spell to conjure up a demon to kill you and your friends. You have a very large bucket of acid. Use greater translocation to teleport the acid (minus the bucket) to a point directly over the wizard's head...now you've got a wizard-turned-puddle of goo. Problem solved.

6. The evil cleric is giving your party severe lessons in pain with all of his nasty spells. Remove his ability to do so much by using lesser translocation to remove his holy symbol.

7. The blackguard has been downing powerful healing potions from a belt full of vials. Use your translocation to take that belt full of potions for yourself.
