3.0 cone and spread spells in 3.5 [Archive] - Wizards Community

So, as a lot of people, I am in the middle of a transition between 3.0 and 3.5 and there's something I can't quite decide yet.

In 3.0, we had certain spells with variable ranges depending on caster level like cones and certain spreads or bursts. In the 3.5 PHB all of the cone spells (except detect plants or animals, can´t remember) have a fixed range, as well as the spreads and bursts. But, with that in mind I don't know what to do with cone (or variable range spreads and bursts) spells from the splatbooks and other supplements.

Just wondering what's everybody's take on it.

The frost breath spell on page 64 of Dragon 312 is like that as well, a cone effect with a variable (close) range. Actually, as far as I can tell, most of the articles in that issue follow the 3.0 rules. Kinda disappointing. Anyway, I digress.

To bring them over, I would probably just convert the cone to a fixed range. I'm not sure what the range should be though. It's 3rd-level cleric spell. The 1st-level burning hands spell has a 15-foot cone (-shaped burst). The 5th-level Sor/Wiz, 6th-level Water spell cone of cold is a 60-foot cone.

I guess somewhere around a 30-foot cone for the spell in Dragon 312 would be appropriate, but I can't say for sure.

That's the spell that made me wonder and I also think that the material of Dragon #312 was written with 3.0 in mind.

Oh well... thanks for your input (and BTW, I've been following your posts about magic item pricing guidelines here or at ENworld)
