Okay, can Disintegrate in 3.0 work against living creatures? The wording in the PHB is confusing as it refers to "one creature or object" but then refers to destroying a 10 foot square of non-living matter.

Does this mean it only affects non-living matter or is this the effect only if it affects a large non-living object?

"Up to a 10-foot cube of non-living material is affected, so the spell disintegrates only part of any very large object or structure targetted."

So if you target non-living material, there is a limit to the amount that can be affected. If you target a creature, which is also a valid target for the spell, the entire creature is disintegrated, regardless of how large it is.

Thus you can disintegrate a living creature the size of a planet, but not a planet itself, unless the planet is a living creature.

Note that further down in the entry, there is a listing for the the result of a successful Fortitude save, telling you what happens to a creature or object that makes the saving throw. That may help make the intent a bit clearer.
