During the battle, the lich successfully hit the mage with a blindness spell. On the next round the mage wanted to cast a dispel magic that specifically targeted the blindness spell, so as not to remove his other buffs. After doing a quick read-through of the spell, I let him do it so the game wouldn't de-rail into an argument. However, I still don't feel that this is a correct use of dispel magic. The point in his favor: Under the section "Targeted Dispel", it does list a "spell" as a target. Point in my favor: The spell stats section, under "Target or Area" it does not list a "spell" as a target. So I ask the community, What are your thoughts? |

Most spells cannot target a particular spell or spell effect, although they can target the area the spell is in. Of course, the mage has to be aware of the spell effect and have a means of targetting it. In this case, I think he's quite aware of his blindness, and I don't see targetting it as a problem for him. |

The spell description is correct: "You make the dispel check against the spell or each ongoing spell..." There would be little point to having plenty of magical wards if everytime something hit you that would make you wipe your slate clean. |
