I want to make an item, an amulet for instance, that polymorphs me.

This amulet would have a market price of:
4 x 7 x 2000 = 56000 gp

This would let me polymorph into whatever I want (HD cap) and allow for unlimited polymorph uses per day, which is a lot of healing.

This is obviously too powerfull, so I want to make some changes to the item.

The revised amulet would only allow 1 shape to be assumed, this form is chosen when the item is created. Also, this version would not allow for any healing because of the polymorphing effect. I imagine the wearer to be polymorphed the moment he dons the item and reverts back to his original form if he takes the amulet off.

How much would such an item cost? Could I use either Polymorph Self or Polymorph Other in the creation process?

I can't ask my DM because he hasn't got the faintest idea how magic item pricing works, as he is new to the trade.

You're going to have to be more specific to get a good answer.
Do you want an item that "casts" polymorph self on you? Or polymorph other?
Your gear melds with you and becomes non-functional unless you have very specific forms (giant, fey) and a few others at the DM's discretion.
So it's probably better to have the item cast the spell rather than merely allow you to polymorph. Otherwise you might change into a badger (or be tricked into changing into a badger) and the amulet would no longer be accessible for you to change back!

Well, not quite .. it's limited by the item's HD cap .. which, since it was crafted by a 7th level caster, you're limited to a 7 HD creature ... :smirk: ..

Neat ...

You've got the basic item already, but for a limited 1 form, just talk to your DM to apply an appropriate reduction .. (I'm not really sure what to apply myself ... ...)

Just remember, the prices are guidelines, so you and your DM should talk it over and compare it to other items of equivilent ability (*cough*Cloak of the Bat .... *cough*Cloak of Manta Ray )

Enjoy!!

I'll give an example:

I create the item and choose elf as the form.
When I put on the amulet, I am polymorphed into an elf. If I take off the amulet, I change back to whatever form I was. If I want to be an elf again, then I put the amulet back on.

I know elf isn't the most powerful form to change into, but it is an example.
But would it cost more to say that if I change into a dog (if that was the form set), the amulet doesn't meld into my form?

I don't want the amulet to cast Polymorph Self on me, because I want to be able to take it of and put it on whenever I like, without any restrictions on uses per day or duration.

The Polymorph Self/Polymorph Other question was because my wizard has very little spells in his spellbook and I allready have Polymorph Other, while Polymorph Self is the logical choice of course.

Either way, thanks for the response!

I'll compare the prices.

Talking to the Dm isn't really a problem, but he really has no idea how to price Magic Items. A fellow player tried to make a glove of unlimited cure light wounds and nearly got away with it for 2000 gp.

I have no problem with creating custom items, but that was a little bit over the top. I stepped in and pointed out that he has the liberty to say 'no'.

Wrong use of rules. Magic items do not let you cast spells. They have effects that are similar to a spell.

For a price of 56,000 gp, you should get a permanent Polymorph. While wearing that item, you are polymorhed into a single specific creature chosen when the item is made. You get healed 1/day, the first time you put it on and are damaged.

You want choice? OK, but that extra power costs more money. As a DM I would rule that it costs 60,000 gp. When you put it on, you chose the creature. It stays the same for the entire day. You get healed 1/day, the first time you put it on and are damaged.

Multiple choice? Fine, Every time you take it off and put it back on (Standard Action) you can pick a new shape, but that is more money. Try 70,000 gp, healing is still 1/day the first time you put it on and are damaged.

If you want more healing then 1/day, pick a healing spell, make it a pre-req to making the item as well as Polymorph and price it normally.

After a quick visit to a friend's house and a look in the Arms and Equipment Guide I found:

Phylactery of Change - > 11,200 gp

Polymorph Self with indefinite duration and I can adopt a new form 1/day

Not quite what I want but a nice alternative.

Thanks for all the replies
