| terulian09-10-04, 01:24 AM | Okay, so I'm trying to answer this fued that my group has : Can a cleric use a cure spell to heal himself? I think he can, because the range is touch, so it'd make sense that he could *ahem* touch himself to heal, but the SRD states that the target can be you if the description has a line that says "Target : You", but Cure spells don't. So, anyone's thoughts?? |
| okaynowa09-10-04, 01:34 AM | Buff spells such as bull's strength also have a range of touch, and it's generally accepted that casters can target themselves. In every campaign I've ever played in, clerics are allowed to use cure spells on themselves. |
| smrtgmp09-10-04, 01:45 AM | Yes, they can cure themselves. You should beat whoever is arguing with you with your PHB. Make sure to call them an idiot while you're at it. If there are any legal ramifications, tell them smrtgmp put you up to it. |
| strenoth09-10-04, 01:47 AM | I'm suprised it's even a question. The caster is with in range of his spell. The range does nto say 'Touch, excluding self'. A caster with a 5' natural reach (like a giant) woudl be able to heal someone up to (less than or equal to) 5 feet away. 0' away (self) is less than 5' away. So you could heal yourself. |

| The_Ditto09-10-04, 09:16 AM | Here's the relevant lines: Touch: You must touch a creature or object to affect it. A touch spell that deals damage can score a critical hit just as a weapon can. A touch spell threatens a critical hit on a natural roll of 20 and deals double damage on a successful critical hit. Some touch spells allow you to touch multiple targets. You can touch as many willing targets as you can reach as part of the casting, but all targets of the spell must be touched in the same round that you finish casting the spell. but you're getting hung up by this one: Target or Targets: Some spells have a target or targets. You cast these spells on creatures or objects, as defined by the spell itself. You must be able to see or touch the target, and you must specifically choose that target. You do not have to select your target until you finish casting the spell. If the target of a spell is yourself (the spell description has a line that reads Target: You), you do not receive a saving throw, and spell resistance does not apply. The Saving Throw and Spell Resistance lines are omitted from such spells. Some spells restrict you to willing targets only. Declaring yourself as a willing target is something that can be done at any time (even if you’re flat-footed or it isn’t your turn). Unconscious creatures are automatically considered willing, but a character who is conscious but immobile or helpless (such as one who is bound, cowering, grappling, paralyzed, pinned, or stunned) is not automatically willing. Some spells allow you to redirect the effect to new targets or areas after you cast the spell. Redirecting a spell is a move action that does not provoke attacks of opportunity. The trick is, that second passage is describing that you do not get a save if you target yourself with a spell .. that is not the passage to look at to see what targets mean ... that's the passage to use to see if you get a save vs your own spells .. :smirk: The first passage is the passage that covers what a target: touch means .. - creature or object - willing target - must be able to reach it ok .. so are you a creature or object? - are you willing? - can you reach yourself?? :smirk: |
