| Harmor07-24-04, 07:02 PM | I have an item that clearly isn't telling me everything when I cast Identify on it. The item is giving me additional bonuses and spell-like abilities that multiple Identify casts still won't tell me. The item is not cursed, as far as I know so what do I do? Its a Golden Ring with three horns. When I activated the ring using an ancient dwarven dialect (DC 20 Decipher Script check), it allowed me to teleport to my homeland from INSIDE Underdark. [EDIT] I can't take it off...and haven't tried casting Remove Curse on it. |

Identify is a level 2 spell with a 100 gp material component, and it shows you the item's creator casting one spell involved in the creation, and tells you a general rating of the item on a scale from -10 (cursed artifact) to 10 (powerful artifact). A level 6 spell with a 1000 gp component tells you everything about the item. Basically, the PCs have to figure out what it does themselves or get a high Spellcraft check. |

Sounds to me like a cursed item. cursed items identify as a different item and can still functions with having multiple purposes. In fact it can have any range of functions things. The fact that you can't take it off definately points at that direction. Cast detect magic on it and focus on the school of magics it radiates and at what strengths. Your decipherscript thing would probably be Moderate to Strong Conjuration. I recently gave my players boots of striding and springing - and they used detect magic and asked the school - it was strong enchantment, yet boots of striding and springing are faint transmutation. They have since then identified it but havent gone dancing yet. :-D I haven't decided an activation yet, but it's not when in battle. |

Perhaps the trigger could be music audible by the wearer for more than 30 seconds? |

| Tsuul07-26-04, 02:30 AM | The classic answer? Cast detect magic and if it does not have a magical aura then it must be an artifact! Ah the tale of the Head of Vecna (http://www.blindpanic.com/humor/vecna.htm) |
