| Harmor07-31-04, 08:12 PM | How do you deal with multiple castings of Chill Metal (http://www.systemreferencedocuments.org/35/theraven_stephenh/spells/Chill_Metal.html) on a creature? Are they separate, or if something is already "Freezing" does subsequent castings do that damage? Example:Here Chill Metal (http://www.systemreferencedocuments.org/35/theraven_stephenh/spells/Chill_Metal.html) is cast on round 1 and 2: Round Metal Temperature Damage 1 Cold None *Cast Chill Metal (http://www.systemreferencedocuments.org/35/theraven_stephenh/spells/Chill_Metal.html) 2 Icy 1d4 points *Cast another Chill Metal (http://www.systemreferencedocuments.org/35/theraven_stephenh/spells/Chill_Metal.html) 3 Freezing 3d4 points 4-5 Freezing 4d4 points 6 Freezing 3d4 points 7 Icy 1d4 points 8 Cold None Notice how the damage stacks? OR is the spell like this: Round Metal Temperature Damage 1 Cold None *Cast Chill Metal (http://www.systemreferencedocuments.org/35/theraven_stephenh/spells/Chill_Metal.html) 2 Icy 1d4 points *Cast another Chill Metal (http://www.systemreferencedocuments.org/35/theraven_stephenh/spells/Chill_Metal.html) 3-6 Freezing 2d4 points 7 Icy 1d4 points 8 Cold None Where the damage doesn't stack, but extends the period the armor is 'Freezing'. |

Sure, you can try to toss in all kinds of real world science...and say the metal would get colder or something.....but it's realy best to ignore science when talking about D&D magic. Might be a little weird to have a spell do 'a little cold damage' and another spell do 'a lot of cold damage' from the same object....but I think that would work the best. An easy fix is to say only one object can be effected by one chill metal at a time. BT |
| Seeker9508-01-04, 09:45 AM | Originally posted by Bloodtide_the_Red Damage never 'stacks'.Damage "always" stacks. If I hit you with three sword strikes, you take all three strikes worth of damage. If I hit you with three magic missiles you take all three missiles worth of damage. But in the case of chill metal, the spell does not cause the damage directly. The damage is caused by the "temperature" of the metal. So with overlapping spells in place, the temperature does not stack -- it overlaps. The metal will be "colder" for more rounds than a single casting would create. The damage does not "stack" but is still higher than it would be with a single casting. |
