I wanted a spell to make large grappling creatures think twice about grappling one of my companions. I would think this spell already exists in some form, but I can't find any reference.

This spell reminds me of the movie Beetlejuice(tm) that had the character grow spikes while he was grappled.

Grow Spikes
Transmutation
Level: Drd 1, Rgr 1
Components: V
Casting Time: 1 standard action
Range: Touch
Target: One creature
Duration: 10 min./level (D)
Saving Throw: Will negates (harmless)
Spell Resistance: Yes

The target creature grows spikes on their person. Any creature that successfully grapples the target of this spell takes 1d8/2 caster levels (maximum of 5d8) of piercing damage.

[EDIT]Lowered level to 1 for Druid
[EDIT]Lower Duration from 1 hour/level to 10 min./level
[EDIT]Set maximum damage to 5d8

What do you guys think? I made the spell verbal only because I thought this would be something you would cast while grappled?

That's an awfully long duration for a level 1 ranger spell. If it's level 1 ranger, it should be level 1 druid. If it's level 2 druid, it should be at least level 2 ranger.

Not bad, though, since it only deals damage on a grapple.

I assume the will save is for the target of the spell, not the grappler. If so, the save entry should look like this: Saving Throw: Will negates (harmless)

Updated.

You think 1 hour/level is too long? Maybe 10 minutes/level instead? Or 1 minute/level?

I know the damage is only applicable in a limited situation (i.e., grappling), but 1d8/2 levels is an enormous amount of damage for a 1st-level spell. 1d6/2 levels would be more appropriate.

...and max 5d6 at 10th level.

Yes, definitely. I should've said that before too. A 5d6 cap would balance out the spell nicely.

Another mechanic you might want to consider is to bump up the level a notch, and have the spikes come into play whenever an opposing creature enters your square. This would make it handy against bull-rushes and the like.

Hmm...maybe I should update the spell to say whenever an unarmed or grapple attack? That way it will do damage when someone trips, bull-rushes, over-run, unarmed attack or natural attack. If I did that then I would up the level to 2 at least.
