| Harmor07-01-04, 02:40 PM | I should know this but I could see you being able to wear a pair of Isotoner gloves under a set of gauntlets: http://www.activeforever.com/Images/Products/ProductImage_492_189946_FS.jpg under a pair of: http://i18.ebayimg.com/01/i/01/f1/a0/3e_1.JPG Seems reasonable? I know there is a requirement that only: One glove, pair of gloves, or pair of gauntlets on the hands according to the SRD...but I think you can do it? Or do gauntlets already have a leather lining? |
| Beamup07-01-04, 02:44 PM | If the gloves are nonmagical, I'd allow it. Magical gloves under nonmagical gauntlets, maybe - it would depend on the precise description of the gloves. Both magical, absolutely not. The rules you quote are about how many magical items you can gain benefits from at once, not what you can actually wear. Kinda like only being able to wear two rings - sure, you have 10 fingers and could in theory wear multiple rings on each finger, but the idea is that the magic starts interfering with itself. It's a play balance issue. |
| Pathanus07-01-04, 02:47 PM | You can *only* if you have an Epic feat Bonus Item Slot (or something). In the DMG before the Magic Items start, there is a list of all the slots (position) that a character can use for items. Gloves and Gauntlets are in the same slot, so 2 cannot be worn in conjunction without special circumstances (like the Epic feat). http://www.wizards.com/d20/files/v35/MagicItemsI.rtf Check out that link, and then scroll to the bottum of the second page for more info. (duh you put it in your post). I would agree that non-magical gloves and gauntlets do not conflict with eachother, like say you wear both to keep your fingers warm. Path |
| Seeker9507-01-04, 04:15 PM | Because there is only one *mechanics* reason for asking this question, the answer is no. If you want to wear a pair of gloves and a pair of gauntlets, go for it. If you want magical gloves and magical gauntlets, pick one. |
| Beamup07-01-04, 04:44 PM | Actually, there is one other possible mechanical issue. Wearing magical gloves, but nonmagical gauntlets, so that you gain the benefit of the gloves AND can attack with the gauntlets. |
| Seeker9507-01-04, 04:48 PM | Doh! Beamup is right. So, because of the potential for mechanics impacts, my anser is no all around. :D |
| Dunbar07-01-04, 09:01 PM | Originally posted by Seeker95 Doh! Beamup is right. So, because of the potential for mechanics impacts, my anser is no all around. :D But why is that? Can characters only physically wear one necklace ever? And only 2 rings? Clearly you are physically capable of wearing multiple rings, shirts, gloves, even hats. But you can only benefit from one (in the case of rings, 2) magical item per slot (sans epic feats). Either you are physically capable of wearing gloves with gauntlets, or you are not. In fact, since gauntlets are made of metal, it'd probably hurt a lot to wear them without gloves as padding underneath. So yeah, I see no reason you cannot wear gloves and gauntlets together. You can only benefit from one or the other if they are both magical. And, I would probably require a standard action to switch from using one to the other if they were both magical (unless there is some rule for this I am unaware of?). |

You can gain the benefit of a headband of intellect AND be protected by armour that includes a helmet. |
| Edymnion07-02-04, 12:13 AM | See my answer in the other thread where you asked this exact same question over on the Weapons and Feats board: http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=268581 Originally posted by Nimrud And what is wrong with that? You can gain the benefit of a headband of intellect AND be protected by armour that includes a helmet. Because the helmet is not what is enchanted, its the suit of armor. A better example would be a Helm of Brilliance and a Headband of Intellect. You couldn't benefit from both of them at once, only the outermost would work, namely the Helm of Brilliance. |
| Nimrud07-02-04, 02:52 AM | No Edy, I was replying to this post. Originally posted by Beamup Actually, there is one other possible mechanical issue. Wearing magical gloves, but nonmagical gauntlets, so that you gain the benefit of the gloves AND can attack with the gauntlets. Otherwise, I agree with you. |
| BlackSmith07-02-04, 07:04 AM | actually you can wear 2 different magical gloves and 2 different magical gauntlets total of 4 totaly different items on hands. but you can benefit from only one. SRD • One glove, pair of gloves, or pair of gauntlets on the hands • One ring on each hand (or two rings on one hand) • One pair of boots or shoes on the feet Of course, a character may carry or possess as many items of the same type as he wishes. However, additional items beyond those listed above have no effect. |

I have a set of Gloves of Dexterity and I want to wear a set of mundane Spiked Gloves over them. |
| Beamup07-02-04, 08:32 AM | Originally posted by Harmor Yep that's the reason. I have a set of Gloves of Dexterity and I want to wear a set of mundane Spiked Gloves over them. Personally I wouldn't have any problem with that. |
| Arindor07-02-04, 10:25 AM | Also Full plate armor comes with guantlets. You wouldn't be able to wear full plate and magical gloves if you didn't allow them. |
| Beamup07-02-04, 10:32 AM | Originally posted by Arindor Also Full plate armor comes with guantlets. You wouldn't be able to wear full plate and magical gloves if you didn't allow them. You're assumed to replace the standard gauntlets with the magical gloves/gauntlets, generally. |
| Nimrud07-02-04, 12:08 PM | Well, I would have thought your armour class assumes you have all your items of armour on. Replacing full plate gauntlets with leather gloves would leave your hands less protected than your AC would imply. |

Which would require tracking AC by location, which would require a system for hit locations, etc... it's done that way for simplicity and ease of use, not realism. |

Which is why it's easier to assume that you have all your armour pieces on for you to have the armour's AC. If you have magic metallic gauntlets, you can replace normal armour gauntlets. If you have leather gloves, you wear 'em inside your normal gauntlets. In either case, no change to AC, and it looks better than a guy walking around with full plate and ... leather mitts. :) |
| Edymnion07-05-04, 09:02 PM | Originally posted by Harmor I have a set of Gloves of Dexterity and I want to wear a set of mundane Spiked Gloves over them. Yeah, that will work just fine. You will only run into problems when you try to get the gauntlets enchanted. |
| BlackSmith07-06-04, 12:57 PM | Originally posted by Edymnion Yeah, that will work just fine. You will only run into problems when you try to get the gauntlets enchanted. well, no he wont. he can wear as many as 4 different things in his hansds at the same time, all magical, but he can benefir from only one at time. |
| Seeker9507-06-04, 06:21 PM | Originally posted by BlackSmith but he can benefir from only one at time. And that's a problem. So actually, what Edymnion said is true. He can do it, but will run into problems when he goes to get the gauntlets enchanted. |
| glenw7707-06-04, 08:50 PM | This has not been specifically stated yet, so for completeness: When you physically apply a sloted item that is already occupied by a magical item, the previously worn item always overrides all following items. So you could wear magic gauntlets over magic gloves, but the gloves will work and the gauntlets wont. One simply cannot choose which item is functional whenever they want |
| BlackSmith07-07-04, 04:32 AM | Originally posted by Seeker95 He can do it, but will run into problems when he goes to get the gauntlets enchanted. [/B] that was the thing i was pointing. Can. sure it will not be a sunny day for the DM how to keep track what iemis in use but it CAN be doen. (just having that kind of mood, you know) |
