hey, does anyone have a 3.5v of Chromatic Orb, featured in the Faerun based Baldur's Gate games and others? I'd like to get a hold of that sucker.

Wouldn't we all love a level one instant kill spell? ;)

As far as I know, the Chromatic Orb spell has been replaced by a collection of Orb spells, none of which were insta-kill effects.

Chromatic Orb was leagues ahead of the Orb of X spells, it made evocation worth having and at higher levels it was godlike. It was basically a single target attack made out of a prismatic wall/spray effect.

I wonder if I can find the spell online somewhere.

If you want a single target Prismatic Wall, then you can cast Prismatic Ray which does just that.

Yeah, 'sucker' had been replaced with 'suckers'.

Prismatic Ray, page 118, Complete Arcane. Target suffers randomly determined effect from Prismatic Spray theme.

Prismatic Bow, page 113, Comlpete Mage. You get seven colors that you can each fire separately at different targets, each one corresponding to a color from Prismatic Spray

Prismatic Bow, IMO, more closely approximates the power from Chromatic Orb, but Prismatic Ray is more accessible.

I take back what I said, Chromatic orb was godlike for 2nd, but it is still a bit less powerful than prismatic ray. It produced one shot of one color, the color produced is level dependent, did a bit of damage, and you get a +6 bonus to the saving throw on the secondary effect.

It was a 1st level spell, though. Prismatic Ray is a 5th level spell in the SpC.
And not a bad one, at that, if a bit random.

Chromatic Orb was from the AddEd Unearthed Arcana, yes? I can't imagine that sucker 3.5 with all the metamagic floating around. It certainly was the bomb back in the day, though...

PS wasnt that the introduction of Barbarian? Ahhh the old days

Actually, the prismatic bow reminds me a bit of the old clerical Rainbow spell. The spell could either summon a rainbow bridge or (the pertinent effect) a bow with seven different arrows, each with a different effect. It was a great example of those old multipurpose spells that you never see any more.

Remember when spells were reversible? Ah good times.

Yeah... I think the design team wisely decided to pass on the spell that ended up killing you if you failed the save and paralyzed you (read: killed you one action later) when you succeeded.
