If there was a 30' blast, say a fireball, how many medium size creatures could it effect

Just to note, a fireball is a 20' radius, not 30.

However, a 30' radius effect would affect a total of 68 squares, assuming I did my math right

Roughly 28 plus more if there are more than one in a square. (pi R^2 = 3.1415 * 15*15) = 706.8 square foot = by my math 28.27 squares.

Why didn't you pull out a map and figure it out exactly instead of asking someone else to pull out a map? Or in the back of the DMG?

Haha, I dunno if you did or not, but I got 113.1 squares.

because the boards are for help and i didnt know exactly where to look.

But my question is for ToB, a white raven maneuver that inspires people within 30' the fireball was just an example. i have a build idea that i want to try out.

I'm assuming you know the rules for burst area on PH pg 175. You can just calculate it from that with a bit of graph paper.

Alternatively, look at the templates at the back of the DMG (305-310). While there's no 30 ft. burst template, there is a 30 ft. cone template (pg 305), and that's actually more useful. If you count it, you'll see it has 24 squares. Multiply this by 4 for the full burst and you have 96.

Note that this is specifically the number of creatures who can effectively fight in such a space; if all you are talking about is fitting the number is much higher.

a 20ft fireball fits in a square 40x40, or 1600

A square that size fits 64 5ft squares.

But that ignores the following:

Size. a 5 ft square can hold upto 100 Fine size creatures
Grappling. 2 people in a grapple take up one square
Squeezing. People can squeeze together in a single square
Helpless. You can stack helpless people in the same square (this is why two horses can pull a 5ft wide cart - they are tied up and considered helpless)
Mounted. A halfling can mount a war dog, both taking up the same square
Flight. The calculations above are based on the belief that the fireball is a circle, when it is in reality a SPHERE. If cast in the center of a herd of Adult Arrowhawk, you can get approximately eight times as many creatures.

actually its a circle not a square but whatever 20*20*3.1416
and it depends whenter you use square or hexagonal map or even no precise field (blank and mesure distances)

and I wouldnt consider stacking since it would be weird that only your finger is affected since ppl are over you and you still get that full 10d6 fireball...

44 square for 20ft
8for 10ft
4 for 5ft
so make an approx for 30ft around 100
