| Torus al-Nashihra03-29-06, 11:04 AM | I know this is buried in a FAQ somewhere, but the search feature is broken and the Google workaround just gives me tons of pages saying that GMW works on monks unarmed strike, but not the source. So, can anyone tell me on what page, in which book, it specifically states that Magic Weapon/Greater Magic Weapon can be cast on a monk? And does it affect his entire body? Fists/Knees/Feet/Head/Elbows, etc. Without a specific reference, I'm afraid my local DM is going to keep his current ruling that "fist" isn't a weapon, per se. Nor does Magic Fang work since "fist" isn't a tooth or claw, either. Thanks in advance. (Sure would be neat if they'd get that search feature fixed) |
| Peter Smile03-29-06, 11:10 AM | Magic Fang Transmutation Level: Drd 1, Rgr 1 Components: V, S, DF Casting Time: 1 standard action Range: Touch Target: Living creature touched Duration: 1 min./level Saving Throw: Will negates (harmless) Spell Resistance: Yes (harmless) Magic fang gives one natural weapon of the subject a +1 enhancement bonus on attack and damage rolls. The spell can affect a slam attack, fist, bite, or other natural weapon. (The spell does not change an unarmed strike’s damage from nonlethal damage to lethal damage.) Magic fang can be made permanent with a permanency spell. It can affect fist, and there's also affects *other natural weapon* it should also be applied to head, knees and feet. |
| Puca03-29-06, 11:11 AM | A monk’s unarmed strike is treated both as a manufactured weapon and a natural weapon for the purpose of spells and effects that enhance or improve either manufactured weapons or natural weapons. Magic fang gives one natural weapon of the subject a +1 enhancement bonus on attack and damage rolls. The spell can affect a slam attack, fist, bite, or other natural weapon. Magic weapon gives a weapon a +1 enhancement bonus on attack and damage rolls. (An enhancement bonus does not stack with a masterwork weapon’s +1 bonus on attack rolls.) You can’t cast this spell on a natural weapon, such as an unarmed strike (instead, see magic fang). A monk’s unarmed strike is considered a weapon, and thus it can be enhanced by this spell. I dont know that you need much more than this. Magic Weapon explicitly states that monks ua strikes work, and the monk ability itself says it counts as "a natural weapon" for spells like magic fang. |
| Seeker9503-29-06, 12:21 PM | Just don't try to expand this ruling to allow a monk to get his fists / body enchanted! |
| Torus al-Nashihra03-29-06, 02:52 PM | Thanks for the replies, but the SRD does me no good. I need a book. Players Handbook, DMs Guide, some supplement somewhere...as far as this DM is concerned the Internet is not canon. Greater Magic Fang is cool. I don't know how I missed the word "fist" in there. But GMW would be better, since our spellcaster wouldn't have to learn a separate spell just for me. |
| Wilds03-29-06, 03:02 PM | Is there any way to enchant a monks unarmed attacks? Or do they have to reli on class abilities and magic items? |

So too with the description of the monks unarmed strike, which makes it clear that Greater Magic Weapon works even were it not explicitly mentioned. (GMW says it works "like magic weapon, except that it gives a weapon an enhancement bonus on attack and damage rolls of +1 per four caster levels" so the inclusion of the monks strikes for the lesser version applies to the greater.) |
| Puca03-29-06, 03:21 PM | Is there any way to enchant a monks unarmed attacks? Or do they have to reli on class abilities and magic items? Not normally. There are some PrCs that let you get that effect, but otherwise no. There currently is a thread active on the Equipment and Combat forum discssing this topic. |

| Tyler Do'Urden03-29-06, 03:28 PM | Thanks for the replies, but the SRD does me no good. I need a book....everything that's in the SRD... everything, with the exception of the epic stuff and the god stuff... is in either the PHB, the DMG, the Monster Manual, or the Expanded Psionics Handbook. There is absolutely nothing that is in the SRD that is not also in one of the published rulebooks. Each of the core books has a table of contents and an index. Look a little harder. |
| CipherTheory03-29-06, 03:29 PM | The quote about a monk's fists being both natural and manufactured weapons in regard to what works on them is on page 41 of the 3.5 player's handbook. It's the third paragraph under the "Unarmed Strike" header. The spell descriptions for "Magic Fang" and "Magic Weapon" are pages 250 and 251 respectively in the 3.5 player's handbook. Good luck. :) |
| bob_the_great03-29-06, 03:29 PM | haha, beat you to it |

Strange people I know, but they're out there. When that happens, a page number is a player's best friend. :) |
| mvincent03-29-06, 03:42 PM | Thanks for the replies, but the SRD does me no good. I need a book. Players Handbook, DMs Guide, some supplement somewhere...as far as this DM is concerned the Internet is not canon.Note that the SRD is official WotC material that is an exact copy of the text found in your books (minus examples and a few proprietary items, and plus some errata). It is canon and, as far as this board is concerned, typically our primary reference (since we don't usually bring our books to work). That's part of it's purpose i.e. easy access to the actual rules. Anything we quote from the SRD can be found in your books. You probably didn't realize this at all (so don't take it personally), but your above statement borders on being rude. Note: the errata and the FAQ are other internet resources that are typically considered canon. |
| Nom03-29-06, 05:17 PM | an exact copyNitpick - some of the text that is second person in the PH (ie "you") is 3rd person in the SRD "the character", so it's not quite an exact copy. Nitpicking aside, mvincent's correct. Any rule that's clear in the SRD is clear in the PH, and you can find it if you look in the right place. There are a very few rules that aren't clear in the SRD because you need to PH diagrams and examples to get them right. |

| The_Blob03-29-06, 05:50 PM | Magic Fang only affects one weapon (by my interpretation), but since Monks are a special case in other instances (being both a weapon & a natural weapon for example) would the entire flurry of blows/multiple attacks of a monk be affected? It seems that onlt one attack would receive the bonus but IDK  . |
| Zherog03-29-06, 06:04 PM | A monk can flurry with the same body part, so the question is really moot. For example, if you GMF my left fist, nothing prevents me from using just my left fist in a flurry. |
| mvincent03-29-06, 07:11 PM | Insert Steve Martin quote here ______________.As mentioned, no excuse needed (or rather, you already had one). I was merely noting it for future consideration. |
