How many times in the dy can the wizard get his spells? Is it just one as in "Spells per day", Or when ever you rest for 8 hours. I'm running a game and one of my players says it's per 8 hours of rest. I say the other.

So if a wizard has all of his spells at 12AM left over from the day before, thats one set. He blows those and rests. Next set he gets 8 hours later, and blows those. (Thats set two) And then he rests. (Thats set 3).

Once a day you get your spells back after 24 hours from casting with 8 hours of rest.
Get a Ring of Sustanance then you need two hours of sleep and 6 hours of meditaion or contemplation on your spell book.
Pearls of Power are the next best item if you have one for every spell slot you can cast your golden for chosseing your rest cycle time at your conveniance with the Ring and Pearls.

This will let you ether jump right back in to fighting after a minuet of Pearl use or you rest for 8 hours and come back with a different set of spells suited for the chalenges of the extended encounter you may be faceing.

By the rules as written (RAW) 8 hours of rest and 1 hour for preparation are required, but you can only do that once per day. Otherwise, it would be "once per rest period."

This player could either be trying to powergame by getting more spells in a 24 hour period, or he might have come from someone else's game where 8 hours of rest, as often as you can get it, was the house rule.

Remember that prep still takes 1 hour, and interrupted rest adds 1 hour to the rest required for each interruption.

I've played both, and find that once per day, where the "day" switches at midnight, is the most balanced. For example, you could go to sleep at 4:00 p.m. and rest until midnight to prepare your day's spells by 1:00 a.m., if you needed an early start.

Since you are running the game, just let the player know that you are only allowing spells once per day. If he argues, start having his sleep interrupted enough that he never gets to prepare spells, and he'll get the idea.

You are right. The player in your game is trying it on. ;)
