| rusdrake7711-08-04, 08:45 AM | I found that in 3.5 cleric does not need to rest to pray for spells. “Clerics meditate or pray for their spells. Each cleric must choose a time at which he must spend 1 hour each day in quiet contemplation or supplication to regain his daily allotment of spells. Time spent resting has no effect on whether a cleric can prepare spells”. What about Sorcerer and Wizard, do they need to rest? Book seems to be quiet on that. We are playing a siege and it continues for 2 days already. People have used most of their spells, but is that true that they need only to spend ~60 minutes to prepare them back? Sorcerer does not need to prepare spells, does he get them back automatically with sunrise? I do not understand the new SRD at all. All spellcasters always needed 8 hours of undisturbed rest in 3.0 (and ring of sustenance therefore was useless for them). What is the ruling now? |
| hovnarr11-08-04, 09:07 AM | The effects of sleep deprevation in 3.5 might be described somewhere, but I can't remember where. An arcance caster requires 8h rest to reload. The cleric needs but pray for an hour at that selected moment (for instance at dawn). Since it's at a precise time each 24h period, he can only regain his spells once during such a period. A sorceror must meditate after his 8 hour rest to refresh his spell slots (an hour I think). |
| Naeron11-08-04, 09:16 AM | A wizard needs 8 hours of rest to prepare spells, the SRD is quite clear on this. SRD - Magic Overview Rest: To prepare her daily spells, a wizard must first sleep for 8 hours. The wizard does not have to slumber for every minute of the time, but she must refrain from movement, combat, spellcasting, skill use, conversation, or any other fairly demanding physical or mental task during the rest period. If her rest is interrupted, each interruption adds 1 hour to the total amount of time she has to rest in order to clear her mind, and she must have at least 1 hour of uninterrupted rest immediately prior to preparing her spells. If the character does not need to sleep for some reason, she still must have 8 hours of restful calm before preparing any spells. The final sentence precludes gaining an preparation benefits from a Ring of Sustenance. Even though the wearer need only sleep for 2 hours they still need 8 hours of restful calm. A Sorceror or Bard also needs 8 hours of restful calm. SRD - Magic Overview Daily Readying of Spells: Each day, sorcerers and bards must focus their minds on the task of casting their spells. A sorcerer or bard needs 8 hours of rest (just like a wizard), after which he spends 15 minutes concentrating. (A bard must sing, recite, or play an instrument of some kind while concentrating.) During this period, the sorcerer or bard readies his mind to cast his daily allotment of spells. Without such a period to refresh himself, the character does not regain the spell slots he used up the day before. Again a ring of sustenance gives no beenfit to regaining spell slots. |
| kSquared11-08-04, 09:21 AM | Clerics don't need to rest, but they must prepare spells only at a certain time each day. (Typically you pick this time when starting the character.) If they miss their appointed time of day, they can't prepare any more spells for the day. Wizards and sorcerers still need 8 hours of "restful calm". This doesn't mean you actually have to be sleeping, though. (The wizard could sleep for 6 hours and stand watch for 2 hours, for instance.) If he does anything strenuous, it counts as an interruption; each interruption adds 1 more hour to the "restful calm" time he requires to prepare spells. It takes a wizard 1 full hour to prepare all his spells. Sorcerers spend 15 minutes concentrating to get their spells back for the day. All this information is in the SRD, under the "Magic Overview" section. |

Based on the SRD quote above, it doesn't seem that a wizard could stand watch, unless you can somehow stand watch without moving or using skills (ie: Spot/Listen) |
| hovnarr11-08-04, 09:58 AM | Clerics must select a time to memorize and arcane casters must have 8 hours of rest. Does this mean that a sorceror can sleep for 8 hours, adventure for say 6 hours and exhaust all his spells, then rest 8 hours and be good to go again? Is there a rule that says an arcane caster can only use his "spells/day" once every 24 hour period? |
| kSquared11-08-04, 10:05 AM | Based on the SRD quote above, it doesn't seem that a wizard could stand watch, unless you can somehow stand watch without moving or using skills (ie: Spot/Listen) I'm pretty sure that refers to active (Craft, Tumble, etc.), not reactive (Spot, Listen, Sense Motive), uses of skills. Otherwise we would have to assume that for 8 hours you are unable to make Listen and Spot checks. But elsewhere the rules say that even when asleep, you can make Listen checks. Since that's contradictory, IMC wizards can stand watch. Combat, taking more than a single move action, and spellcasting are still no-nos though. Whether this is a house rule or following the RAW is, I guess, up for debate, but that's the way I play it. |

Is there a rule that says an arcane caster can only use his "spells/day" once every 24 hour period? No because it is a daily limit not a "per activity period limit". Spells per day means exactly that, as is supported by the text which talks about "Each day", "To prepare her daily spells", "Like other spellcasters, a sorcerer can cast only a certain number of spells of each spell level per day" and "a wizard can cast only a certain number of spells of each spell level per day". (from the magic overview and the class descriptions). |

Any basic psychology course will tell you: your body is set to the biological clock of your circadian rhythm, which aligns itself to the sun. And even when you're in a place that doesn't get sun (say a dungeon), your clock actually becomes longer, to a point that's on average between 25 and 26 hours. So, sleeping out of rhythm isn't completely possible all the time, as you'll mostly just toss and turn. |
| tarkin11-08-04, 12:00 PM | In 3.0, there was an official rule that states you can only regain spells once/day. It is in the core books, though you have to look for it. I believe that the same rule carried over to 3.5 |
| Baron Rod11-09-04, 01:27 AM | As far as the realms are concerned any spellcaster gets their spells once a day. A ring of Sustenance is basicly only good for a fighter or rouge who can sleep 2hrs during the first part of the night and spend the rest of the night on watch. Baron Rod |

I think it's great for a cleric. You're only out of armor 2 or 3 hours a night, and can pull your weight helping with the watch. Also remember that if you're "tending to the sick" that you need to find the extra hours somewhere. |
| pyk11-09-04, 12:47 PM | In 3.0, there was an official rule that states you can only regain spells once/day. It is in the core books, though you have to look for it. I believe that the same rule carried over to 3.5 It was hotly debated as to exactly what a 'day' was in 3.0, and left entirely to DM's decision. The relevant section of the 3.0 PHB is pg 154, recent casting limit/rest interruptions. The only limit to an arcane casters new spells per day is the previous 8 hours prior to preperation of the new spells per day. So, every 9 hours, an arcane caster could get a whole new set of spells, unless the DM put a stop to it. Clerics, on the other hand, had a specific time of day they had to meditate and pray, so they were restricted to a 24 hour period. |
