I have a sorcerer who had a terrible injury and no longer has a voice.

Can he still cast verbal component spells via some other means?

Maybe clicking something or playing a musical instrument, etc. Or has his life as a sorcerer come to an end?

Will he have to wait and take the silent spell feat????

Officially I think Silent Spell is your only hope.

Unofficially however, if you wanted to RP out a character who can not talk but still wanted to cast spells, I would probably allow them to use some other form of noise making- be that a musical instrument or whatever.
I would not impose a spellcraft penalty on others tryin to identify the spell.

But that's just my $.02

I agree with Selgard. From a balance perspective, it shouldn't be that hard to come up with an alternative rule that doesn't confer any special advantages (like casting spells quietly) or huge disadvantages (he might need to have the instrument on him at all times, but he'll still be able to cast spells with verbal components as long as he does). As a DM I'd be fine with it since it wouldn't break my game in any way I can see. As Selgard said, it would have to be functionally equivalent, so others wouldn't have extra trouble deciphering what your sorcerer was doing. As with casting any spell, people will know you're casting a spell, even if you're just strumming a lyre or something.

Get someone to cast 'Regenerate' on you. Ta-da!

I think what I would do is require the sorceror to have some sort of focus, like a wand, and just make him do concentration checks to get off his spells.

Or, if the DM doesn't allow that, kill the character, get a Resurrection. Heck, this spell can turn a small heap of ash into a fully functioning human again... it should be more than able to repair the sorcerer's voice! ;)

Except they're the same level, so a spring for Resurrection means the same resources spent, and with the cheese, you loose a level?

Reeeeeeal cheesy. Those munchkins!

Heh, I know, but you'd only do it if the DM refuses to let Regenerate do its job.

IMO, if regenerate doesn't work, then your DM is going out of his/her way to punish you. Talk with your DM to see what he/she had in mind when this happened to your character.

Well, yes, there's one other alternative. Assuming he can make some kind of vocal (if not verbal) sound, he can take the Nonverbal Spell feat from the Planar Handbook. It lets you trade a normal verbal component for a growl, bark, wheeze, titter, giggle, or burp. So long as you're making a sound with your mouth, you can cast spells with verbal components.

Or switch to reincarnate. New body :P [/joke]
Honestly, this voice-losing is already deep in house-ruling, so care to elaborate the exact way of losing voice?

In any way, you should talk to the DM, because he is not only gimping the spells, but - more importantly - really hinders roleplaying... roleplaying without speaking is not fun for more than one or two session, so ask him about it - it is very probable that he has something in store for your character.

Hmm, I kind of assumed this was a character choice - that you had chosen to have this happen to your character prior to the beginning of the campaign. If your DM did this to you in game, and you started of speaking and would like to continue, then the standard magical treatments should do the trick. Otherwise, as Lord_Tirian said, hopefully the DM is just making this some sort of plot device and you'll find a way to recover your voice soon. If it's just some form of permanent irreversible injury... quite stupid.

There a feat in the planer book that allows a race of mutes cast spells. If you got to the astral plane you might be able to train to pick up this feat.

I'd start taking levels in Shadowcaster from Tome of Magic if allowed to and take advantage of the "Creeping Darkness" level replacement deal. Then again, I absolutely love Shadow Magic. Very flavourful option with no verbal components, in any case.

With Silent Spell, Easy Metamagic (Silent Spell), and Rapid Metamagic, you can cast all your spells silent at no cost! Fairly feat intensive, but mute beggars can't be choosers.

Regenerate is the spell for this. If it can grow back your legs without a mark, it can fix your vocal cords. Hell, I would even expand Remove Blindness/Deafness to apply while I was houseruling in something that could mute you in the first place.

Tongues
Divination
Level: Brd 2, Clr 4, Sor/Wiz 3
Components: V, M/DF
Casting Time: 1 standard action
Range: Touch
Target: Creature touched
Duration: 10 min./level
Saving Throw: Will negates (harmless)
Spell Resistance: No

This spell grants the creature touched the ability to speak and understand the language of any intelligent creature, whether it is a racial tongue or a regional dialect. The subject can speak only one language at a time, although it may be able to understand several languages. Tongues does not enable the subject to speak with creatures who don’t speak. The subject can make itself understood as far as its voice carries. This spell does not predispose any creature addressed toward the subject in any way.

Tongues can be made permanent with a permanency spell.
Arcane Material Component

A small clay model of a ziggurat, which shatters when the verbal component is pronounced.

You know, by RAW... Although that feat that lets you cast making noises is a better bet.

See if your DM will allow an altered version of Natural Spell that doesn't have a wildshape prereq.

If he has lost his voice, then per RAW, he can make himself understood about 0 feet. And spells are not a language of an intelligent creature. Even if he can cast this spell with verbal components.

The player has decided the character should stay mute now. He does not want him to speak ever again. So it is a choice made not to speak since his injury.

Does that help any?

Musical instrument, clacking, silent spell, are all these good choices. Was it a bad move to stay speechless?

Thanks everybody!

The player sucks and if he refuses to have his character speak for the rest of his life, you'd better find a way to make that a very short time indeed... :P

Really, it's like losing two levels and doubling the casting times of every spell he'll ever use. [Huh? How? Well, with silent spell he'll be using higher spellslots for each spell, and applying metamagic doubles casting time if you're a spontaneous caster]

I don't think the rest of the party will like it. Unless they themselves are hardcore RP'ers, then they'll probabaly be mutilated in a similar way already.

Someone can cast it on him and make it permanent (until dispelled...)
Character can make verbal noises, so he will be able to be understood for as far as those noises carry.

I didnt quite do my homework, Easy metamagic can reduce a spell to a minimum level adjustment of +1, im not sure if Practical Metamagic carries the same stipulation, but thats not the only way to get rid of a Metamagic cost, Incantatrix comes to mind. Removing the casting time increase is fairly simple as well for a sorcerer, with the alternate class feature from the PHB2, and the Rapid Metamagic feat from the Complete Mage. So all hope is not lost, but it may take you a while to get your character to stop sucking.

Well I think it quite cool for this to have happened. And kudos the the player who is gonna roll with it as opposed to just make a new character or do the easy things like regen, res etc etc.

I would allow for a rod of tongues to start. Activation doesn't have tobe a word and then he can cast as he "trains" (gets feat) to cast with out verbal. The planes one is cool. Just a whistling Sorc here. Nothing to worry about.

I would give a -1 or 2 mod to spellcraft check2 by enemies if he is casting by say whistling.
