Hi for anyone thats played the computer game Baldur's gate 2 there is a wizard spell that i really liked in the game Melf's Minute Meteors. i just wanted to know if some of you thought it would be ok to use that spell in a D&D game with one of my wizards.

thanks for the input

It would require some updating, but the spell was hardly over powering. In fact, given the nature of energy resistance in 3.x, it probably wouldn't do much damage, as fire resistance is rather prevelant.

There are a few conversions floating around out there. I'd help you find them if the search wasnt down. You could always try google.

I throught about it time ago...

isnt very hard to convert neither:

the caster charges one of this hands with one tiny meteor per caster level up to 20, he can cast each meteor as a ranged touch attack, each meteor will deal [insert proper damage] fire damage.

you cant use the hand for nothing until all the meteors are cast or the caster dispell the meteors.

the meteor can ignite flamable things.

the range it is close.

the duration could be perfectly 1 hour/level

now blend everything.

knowing the spell fire arrow and scorching ray, I would say that the meteors would deal 2d6 damage or 1d6+caster level up to 5.

However, there was one little detail that made Melf's Minute Meteors incredibly powerful: they hit as a +5 weapon. Lich problems? Meteors do the trick. Damage Reduction 10000000/+4 a problem? Meteors get around it. If I recall correctly, they even bypassed spell resistance as they basically created physical objects.

Minute Meteors was my favorite spell from BG2. It was a reliable ranged attack and I could use it when my party was in melee. I don't think BG2 modelled such things like cover (ranged touch doesn't sound too bad until you have an ally standing in the way), so it wouldn't be as good in D&D.

Since MM is a spell it would bypass all DR unless you stipulate that it doesn't.

also was considered all fire damage. So DR dont comes into play neither.

also remember that elemental resistance on second edition was % based, so unless a creature had 100% fire resistance, always taked damage.

no, in BG2 i am pretty sure part of it at least was blunt damage.

but anyways, if you want it the way it worked in BG2, Caoslayer's adaptation should be fine.

for the record though, that's not the melf's minute meteors that melf developed =P works pretty close to similar, but it is definitely different from the real thing ;)

which is ok, 'cause if authors payed any attention to these sort of things, they would realise that in faerun, there is no "bigby's interposing hand", because Bigby is from Greyhawk, not faerun. there is no "melf's minute meteor", or "melf's acid arrow" in faerun because, once again, Melf is not from Faerun. he's from greyhawk.

but that's beside the point =P

in relation to BG 2, has Greater Malison ever been re-done in 3/3.5 in any incarnation?

from Gamefaqs:

Melf's Minute Meteors (Evocation, Alteration)
Level: 3
Range: 70 yds
Duration: Special
Casting Time: 3
Area of Effect: 1 target/meteor
Saving Throw: None

This spell enables the wizard to cast small globes of fire (one for
each experience level they have attained), each of which bursts into a
1-foot-diameter sphere upon impact, inflicting 1d4 points of damage to
the creature struck. It can also ignite combustible materials (even
solid planks). The meteors are treated as missiles hurled by the wizard
with a +5 bonus to the attack rolls and with no penalty for range. Each
meteor inflicts +3 damage, and an additional +3 fire damage.
The wizard may discharge up to five missiles per round.

umm, you was half right, it is both phisical and fire damage.

nope, i was all right.

if you read closely, i said "i am pretty sure at least _part_ of it was blunt damage." you can tell it deals blunt, because it damages clay golems.
