| Saurstalk06-19-06, 07:18 PM | In the Witch King novel by R.A. Salvatore, Jarlaxle has a handsome bracer that allows him to draw daggers as a free action to wield in melee or throw at random. I've looked through various books and can't find such a magic item. Does one exist? Where? If not, any ideas how to make such a magic item. I'm thinking it'd have a free action draw and function as "Call Weapon" for a certain number of rounds, with the daggers disappearing instead of remaining around. |

Technically, it's psionic, not magic, but seeing that I started the post here, I thought to continue it here as well. Ultimately, the means for constructing the item is tied to the DMG magic item creation, so it still fits here. That said, how does this look? Bracer of Daggers: As a free action, a dagger can be summoned into the bracer wearer’s hand. The dagger can be held for up to 3 minutes (or 1 minute per caster level) or it can be passed to the wearer’s free hand with no penalty. There is no limit to the number of daggers that can be summoned with this psionic item. However, daggers disappear if they have left the wielder’s grip for 2 consecutive rounds. Daggers summoned through the bracer are distinctive due to their astral glimmer. They are considered magic weapons and thus are effective against damage reduction that allows a magic weapon to overcome. Advanced (or augmented) forms of bracers exist - augmented to summon enchanted daggers. Moderate Conjuration (Teleportation); CL 3rd; Craft Universal Item, call weapon; Price 48,000 gp (Mundane Dagger), 64,000 (+1 [CL4]), 96,000 gp (+2 [CL6]), 112,000 gp (+3 [CL7]), 128,000 gp (+4 [CL8]), 144,000 gp (+5 [CL9]); Weight 1 lb. (ACF). Note: Other bracers exist that allow, as a full round action, the summoning of any type of weapon as per the call weapon power. The base price for this variant is the same as above. The base price for the Bracer of Daggers is calculated as: [Power Level] x [Manifester Lvl] x 2,000 gp x 4 (duration measured in rounds) x 2 (1 min./lvl). (In essence, I am treating it as "continuous," which ties into the free action conjuring.) I opted NOT to extend the calculation above, including free action summoning, to a full application of call weapon, simply for fear of imbalancing the item. However, if I were to extend free action to a full application of call weapon in a bracer, I would multiply the base price calculation above by 2. This is based on a comparison to crafting a ring with no space limitation, i.e., 2x the base price. In essence, while the bracer is limited by space, there would be no limitation as to what may be conjured. It may not be a clean analogy, but serves as a means to balance this variant of the bracer's ability. In addition, while the power call weapon calls for a full round to activate and allows for any weapon to be called, because I am limiting my bracer to only daggers, I opted to allow summoning to be a free action. This falls into the notion of the 2,000 gp multiplier as "continuous" usage. Similarly, I equate "command word" with "swift action", which is noted as another variant below. Essentially, to reduce the cost of the bracer, the creator could opt to institute a "swift action" instead of a "free action". Cost wise, to alter as a "swfit action", you would substitute 1,800 gp for 2,000 gp in the formula above. Last, the concept of Bracer of Daggers could easily have substituted other types of weapons, e.g., Bracer of Throwing Knives, Bracer of Throwing Axes, Bracer of Shortswords, and so forth. Please let me know your thoughts. Thanks. |
