| Shr3dZ04-25-04, 07:20 PM | Ive been saving up a bunch of questions for you guys, hope you dont mind. Most of them are small details that I cant find on my own or, my DM has a problem with. SMALL DETAILS 1) Using a 2-handed weapon 1-handed, is that a -4 to hit? 2) Is it possible for a wizard to cast enlarge & premenancy on himself, then while large, cast polymorph into a huge creature? Or even without the permenancy, how would that work? 3) Can you cast Great Magic Weapon on a +2 weapon? Would the benefits stack? DM ISSUES 4) He thinks its not right that a wizard with scribe scroll can scribe a scroll that a cleric is casting for it. In otherwords a scroll of cure light wounds made by a wizard. Im pretty sure in other threads Ive read it is possible... right? 5) The spell duration of some spells is 1 day/lvl, this one spell I want, Unfailing Endurance, has that duration plus 1 creature touched/lvl aswell. So I was saying sweet, our whole party will have U.E. for 9 days, after that Ill just cast it on us again, but he says that he thinks its too powerful and would think that the spell probably means, 9 days max but each target takes up 1 day. In otherwords a party of 6 would get 1 day - 12 hours. Is the whole party U.E. for 9 days too powerful? TIA! :) |
| DDRGasm04-25-04, 09:28 PM | Here are my answers. Hope this helps. 1) You can't wield a weapon that's normally a two handed weapon in only one hand, it's simply too big for you. The Bastard Sword is kind of in-between one-handed and two-handed, look it up for special rules. However, without special training (such as the Monkey Grip feat), it is impossible to wield something the size of a greatsword in one hand. 2) I would say multiple magical enhancements to size do not stack. Even though the enlarge person is permanent, it is still a magical effect (it can be dispelled, for example). Even if the two size increases come from two different spells, they're both temporary magical effects, and I don't believe they stack. 3) If you cast greater magic weapon on a weapon that's already magical, the benefits overlap, and you apply the best bonus available. For example, a 16th level caster casting the spell (normally granting a +4 bonus) on a +2 weapon, the bonus would increase to a total of +4. 4) The very first line of the "scribe scroll" feat says "You can create a scroll of any spell that you know." Since you don't know cure light wounds, you can't create a scroll of it. Your DM is perfectly within his rights to say you couldn't make the scroll. 5) A DM has the right to not allow any spell into their game, if they think it is too powerful or might be disruptive, especially one not found in the player's handbook. I don't know the effects of the spell, so I can't comment on whether I think it would be disruptive or not. Sorry, but it seems all the answers I came up with for you don't help your character become more powerful. However, in my opinion, those were all correct answers. |

Agree with everything you said, but: 1) You can't wield a weapon that's normally a two handed weapon in only one hand, it's simply too big for you. The Bastard Sword is kind of in-between one-handed and two-handed, look it up for special rules. However, without special training (such as the Monkey Grip feat), it is impossible to wield something the size of a greatsword in one hand. Correct, except Monkey Grip changed. It now lets you use a Large weapon as if you were Large, albiet at a -2 penalty. So you can use a Large Greatsword, but it is still two-handed (which is good, since you couldn't use it at all before). A Large Longsword would go from two-handed to one-handed. 4) The very first line of the "scribe scroll" feat says "You can create a scroll of any spell that you know." Since you don't know cure light wounds, you can't create a scroll of it. Your DM is perfectly within his rights to say you couldn't make the scroll. See 3.5 DMG, p215, under Prerequisites: "It is possible for more than one character to cooperate in the creation of an item, with each participant providing one or more of the prerequisites. In some cases, cooperation may even be necessary. "If two or more characters cooperate to create an item, they must agree among themselves who will be considered the creator for the purpose of determinations where the creator’s level must be known. The character designated as the creator pays the XP required to make the item." A wizard and a cleric together meet the prerequisites for creating a scroll of cure light wounds. |
| Bloodtide_the_Red04-25-04, 10:59 PM | 2)Yes, you can easly make yourself Permentaly Enlarged. Your size at the time you cast the polymorph counts, so you could Enlarge yourself to large size and then polymorph into a huge creature....just remember the HD limit. 3)Enhancement bonuses don't stack. 4)Sure a wizard and cleric could work together to make an item. 5)It's of course the DM's call there. | Shr3dZ04-25-04, 11:45 PM | Sorry, but it seems all the answers I came up with for you don't help your character become more powerful. Heh, my aim wasnt to make my character more powerful, I really just wanted your honost opinions, thanks for them. Ok I think all have been answered accept maybe 2 and 5. For 2 I think my DM is going to rule against it, but Id still like to know if its possible. And for 5 I think that I need to know wether the spell actually functions the way I think it does. 9 days of UE for up to 9 characters being that Im 9th level, that is how the spell describes itself, is there any other way to interpret it? If that is correct then I will leave it up to my DM to decide. "If two or more characters cooperate to create an item, they must agree among themselves who will be considered the creator for the purpose of determinations where the creator’s level must be known. The character designated as the creator pays the XP required to make the item." My DM could interpret this as 2 wizards getting together to create a scroll, it seems ratehr ambiguous... |
| Bloodtide_the_Red04-26-04, 12:31 AM | 5)As writen, Unfailing Endurance would be the spell effect for one day per level of the caster per person....in3.0. Wizards decided theas types of buff spells were too powerful. So a 3.5 conversion might be 1 hour a level or even just 1 turn a level. As for 2) you can point out there are magic items that have both aracne and divine spells in them. So other then multiclassing, it would have to be two casters working together. BT |
| Shr3dZ04-26-04, 12:54 AM | Thx for the answers! Oh, I just remembered one other question! In 3.0 you can cast 2 spells a round, but in 3.5 its only 1 with a full move right ? |
| Beamup04-26-04, 08:42 AM | I'll just chime in again on these, and your new one. 1) Using a 2-handed weapon 1-handed, is that a -4 to hit? No, it's impossible. 2) Is it possible for a wizard to cast enlarge & premenancy on himself, then while large, cast polymorph into a huge creature? Or even without the permenancy, how would that work? Yes, you can do this, even with a temporary Enlarge. The interesting question is what happens when the Enlarge wears off. I'd rule the Polymorph expires too. 3) Can you cast Great Magic Weapon on a +2 weapon? Would the benefits stack? You can cast it all you like. But, bonuses of the same type do not stack - only the better bonus is in effect. So if you're at least level 12, the weapon improves and the fact that it used to be +2 doesn't factor in any more. Below that, nothing changes. 4) He thinks its not right that a wizard with scribe scroll can scribe a scroll that a cleric is casting for it. In otherwords a scroll of cure light wounds made by a wizard. Im pretty sure in other threads Ive read it is possible... right? By the rules, it is 100% possible. Balance issues aside, the duration is 1 day/level. It lasts 9 days regardless of the number of targets. But, if the DM thinks it is too powerful, he is well within his rights to nerf it. In 3.0 you can cast 2 spells a round, but in 3.5 its only 1 with a full move right? You can cast 1 quickened spell + however many other spells you have actions for. Since all PHB spells are either quickened or at least 1 standard action, that means 2 spells max (under normal circumstances), one of which must be quickened. |
| Nom04-26-04, 09:22 AM | PHB 3.5 pg 227, "Enlarge Person": "Multiple magical effects that increase size do not stack" (emphasis mine). In other words, any other magical effect that increases size uses your non-magical size as it's reference size, not your magical size. If it doesn't increase the size, then you're fine. |

Do note that if you Shapechange into a Choker (3.5 MM) or Gambol (MMII) you get an extra standard or move action each round (and thus can get off one more spell), or if you shapechange into a Chronotryn (FF) you could actually get off two normal spells and two quickened spells each round. Man, 3.5 shapechange is so broken. |

Man, 3.5 shapechange is so broken. And you ever meet these creatures when? ;) If your DM is ever silly enough to let you familiarize yourself with them, or even hear about them in the first place, that's his fault. For all intents and purposes, these creatures don't exist as far as my players' PCs know. :D 3.5 shapechange now unbroken. |
| ksbsnowowl04-26-04, 09:55 AM | Originally posted by Heron_Marked_Blade 3.5 shapechange now unbroken. Oh trust me, it's still broken. (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=226959) And you meet the choker when you're a 2nd level character and the DM isn't looking ahead to 17th level silly. |
| Goreg Skullcrusher04-26-04, 09:55 AM | Just adding support. 2) Is it possible for a wizard to cast enlarge & premenancy on himself, then while large, cast polymorph into a huge creature? Or even without the permenancy, how would that work? Yes, this is a valid tactic. Also, note that Polymorph is a not a spell that changes size. You simply acquire the form of the monster in question, which may or may not be larger. It's entirely possible the form could be smaller. This may be interpreted differently by the DM (as is his perogative) but a strict reading of the text allows you to Polymorph then Enlarge. (assuming you're still Humanoid) 5) The spell duration of some spells is 1 day/lvl, this one spell I want, Unfailing Endurance, has that duration plus 1 creature touched/lvl aswell. Regardless of the number of targets, the spell lasts as long as the Duration indicates. (Exception: Water Breathing) However, like someone mentioned previously, non-Core material should be reviewed by the DM first, and he's very much in his right to ban material that he thinks finds disruptive or too powerful. And you meet the choker when you're a 2nd level character and the DM isn't looking ahead to 17th level silly. And by the time you're level 17, you're supposed to wield considerable power. Given that the Choker form has its limitations, (it's ugly as hell, to be sure :D) it's really the only broken shape one can take under Core. The rest is either 3.0 material or 3rd party. You can't often expect to mix the two and maintain a perfectly balanced game. Ban Chokers and see how "broken" it is for a level 9 spell. |
| Kyuketsukiouji04-26-04, 10:02 AM | About the scroll thing. Yes a cleric and a mage working together can scribe a scroll of cure light wounds as you've described. Note, however, that it's still a cleric scroll, and that the mage won't actually be able to use it, though. |
| ksbsnowowl04-26-04, 10:24 AM | Originally posted by Goreg Skullcrusher The rest is either 3.0 material or 3rd party. You can't often expect to mix the two and maintain a perfectly balanced game. 3.0, yes; 3rd party, no. And I seem to remember WotC stating that anything not updated for 3.5 was still good... Ban Chokers and see how "broken" it is for a level 9 spell. See the link in my last reply. Even without chokers the spell is broken. For one 9th level slot you can duplicate 10 different spells (using all 10 of them each round) a virtual unlimited number of times, just by turning into a beholder. Trust me, uless your DM has you fighting advanced goblins and the like until 20th level, there is no way the spell isn't broken. |
| Beamup04-26-04, 10:57 AM | Originally posted by ksbsnowowl Do note that if you Shapechange into a Choker (3.5 MM) or Gambol (MMII) you get an extra standard or move action each round (and thus can get off one more spell), or if you shapechange into a Chronotryn (FF) you could actually get off two normal spells and two quickened spells each round. Man, 3.5 shapechange is so broken. Those examples are exactly why I phrased it as "+however many more you have actions for" and "under normal circumstances." Let's also note that, if a spell happened to be devised that took a move-equivalent action to cast, you could cast it, a quickened spell, and a normal spell in 1 round without doing anything special. Which is, I expect, the reason there AREN'T any such spells. |
| tiercel04-26-04, 05:36 PM | Originally posted by Shr3dZ 2) Is it possible for a wizard to cast enlarge & premenancy on himself, then while large, cast polymorph into a huge creature? Or even without the permenancy, how would that work? Polymorph itself doesn't have the upper-size-category limit in its text, it is part of the infamous "functions like alter self" clause. From the SRD, alter self : The new form must be within one size category of your normal size. Since enlarge person is an ongoing magical effect (whether or not its duration has been extended to permanent), I would assume your enlarged size is not considered your normal size. Thus, a Medium sized wizard cannot use the enlarge then polymorph combo to become a Huge sized creature, as I read the rules. If the wizard polymorphed into a Large-sized humanoid, then presumably he could enlarge himself, becoming a Huge variant of that Large humanoid (following the rules of enlarge person). This wouldn't allow access to true Huge humanoids, nor would the wizard be able to use this process to become a Huge variant of any other Large form -- since polymorph changes his type and subtype. For example, enlarge person would fail to target the wizard after he'd polymorphed into a troll (type: giant). |
| Heron_Marked_Blade04-26-04, 06:02 PM | Nevermind, answered my question after posting. |
